Palssonater
Re: \"Stupid!\" ....Firearm stories.... Excellent post! A lot can be learned from it. Here's my worst story. We were ducking hunting in the marsh out of our boat blind. I was using my Remington 1100 Semi-Auto. This set of mallards responded to my calling and turned on a dime. They were about 150ft out and 150ft up and they locked up. To a duck hunter, this is the best feeling in the world. After a bit more chatter I picked up my gun and was holding it infront of me. I popped the safety off down by my belly(mistake) and raised it. One of my hood ties(on my jacket) was around the trigger and as I raised it(not quite to my shoulder), it shot once, reloaded and shot again. Two magnum shells with the birds not even close. I blew the whole setup, and had the top corner of the gun butt slap my shoulder twice. I turned white as a ghost, unloaded the other shell and sat back. The other two guys were more mad that they missed the perfect setup, but were concerned when I told them what happened. The rest of the day, I just sat back and called. My gun went in the case. I don't click the safety off anymore until the gun is on my shoulder and I am following a critter.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: \"Stupid!\" ....Firearm stories.... Had 1 scary incident about 27 years ago. I was deer hunting with my 1970's era Rem 700 ADL. I had a nice 10 point walk out in front of me. I eased the safety off and drew a bead on him. I pulled the trigger and nothing happened, no click, just dead silence. I eased the rifle off of my sholder and turned it to look at the safety and make sure it was off, and BOOM, it launched a 30-06 bullet into the side of the stand. And my finger wasn't even touching the trigger! I cycled the bolt and BOOM, it fired again when I closed the bolt! By now I was so shook up I didn't know what to do. I finally got it unloaded and immediately went to town and had a gunsmith check it out. He couldn't find anything wrong with it, but I didn't trust it. I traded it in on a 742 in 280. About 2 or 3 years later, I heard that Remington recalled those rifles for the exact problem I had. Turned out to be a problem with the bolt assembly. Reloader
Re: \"Stupid!\" ....Firearm stories.... I have never had anything truly stupid happen with me, and hope it never does. I do have 2 stories that fit though. 1 My fathers cousin (whatever that makes him to me...) was at home when his son and a friend came home with their .22 rifles placed them on the kitchen counter and then went out to ride their 4 wheeler. After they left he checked the gun to see if it was loaded by opening the action. after observing an empty chamber he closed the action, and put the rifle back on the counter. A short while later he decided the kitchen wasn't the best place for the gun and picked it up to move it to another room. his hand somehow hit the trigger and the gun fired through his shoe and removed a toe. He had failed to realize that their was a loaded clip in the gun and he chambered a round by his carless procedure to check the gun. 2 I was out plinking with my brothers at my dads shooting range. I was using my dads Ruger MkI .22 pistol. (Fired a 2 inch group at 50 yards over shooting sticks that day.) This particular pistol does not have a slide lock and when the last round fires it cycles normaly. If you haven't kept count you will just get a click on an empty chamber. I had lost count on one clip and heard the click. I kept the gun pointed at the berm (thanks God and years of gun safty lectures from my dad) and reached to open the action to double check the chamber. The gun sudenly fired and scared the heck out of me. Apparently the round had a hangfire in the priming compound and it flared after a few seconds firing the round. Ever since then I have waited at least 5 - 10 seconds after a click before I open a chamber on any gun.
