HarvDog
I think I want to get a semi-auto and maybe a Glock...either the 9x19 (model 19) or 40 (model 23). Any thoughts? I'm guessing I'll spend just under $600. Does that sound about right?
muggs
Re: Still considering a pistol Well, I know they're popular Harv, but personally I don't really care for the Glocks. Their grips make me feel like I'm holding a 2X4 JMO. If you looking for the tactical type of weapon, take a look at the Springfield XD, it comes in 9mm or 40 cal, you'll like it. Wait until they have a firearm show, you can find some deals. My buddy picked up a really nice Tauras semi-auto tactical gun for $300. I think it was a .40 cal, nice little gun. popgun
Re: Still considering a pistol Harv, I have a 40 cal. Glock and really like the way it shoots. The only problem I had was: I wanted a concealed carry gun and bought the Glock 27 for $499. but I had to buy a $41. plus 2 magazine so that I had enough grip to hold in my hand. It is a good shooter but I don't carry it. The weight of the full magazine pulls the grip away from my waist and makes it difficult to keep it concealed. I still think my S&W Chief's Special .38 makes the best carry gun I own. ....popgun
Strut10
Re: Still considering a pistol I've got both the Glock 23 & the Glock 27 40's (as well as a 29 10mm). I've never had a failure-to-feed or any type of mechanical problem with any of them. The 23 is a joy. The 27 is a joy.......only smaller. I've got a pretty good-sized hand and have no trouble gripping the little 27 with the factory mag. I just roll my pinkie underneath the mag. No control problems at all. The 29 ain't for everybody. It's a serious stopper (and my daily carry weapon) and it's a joy to shoot. But, unless you reload, it's a bit pricey to shoot (if you shoot a lot). There's a reason over 60% of all American law enforcement officers are carrying Glocks!!
johnf
Re: Still considering a pistol I don't care for the Glock to carry. They are great for cops or tacticle IMO but for the average person who is going to keep it on the night stand or around the house it just doesn't have enough safty features for my taste. I would get a snub nose 38 or 357 mag. JMO

There is no external safety to disengage prior to squeezing the triggers on either of the guns. I just don't see how a revolver is safer than a Glock. I could almost buy your logic for a semi auto gun that starts as a double action then operates as a single action but the Glock has a pull that is similar to my revolver. I guess its safer to shoot 5 shots rather than 10 or more shots?
ZooBear
Re: Still considering a pistol HarvDog, what are you going to use the gun for? I wont say anything bad about the Glock but.., I think your better off with a revolver for your first handgun. I think they are easier to clean and if you want to reload they dont throw brass everywhere. A 6" Blackhawk will serve well as a home defense gun and a good hunting gun for about $285.00. They dont carry well in a pocket though. LOL
HarvDog
Re: Still considering a pistol Ok...I went pistol shopping today. I'd still love to get a semi-auto but right now I think I'm leaning towards a revolver, either a 357 or 44 mag. I really liked the Ruger with a 2 1/4" barrel. LifeNRA
Re: Still considering a pistol Like the others said, "What are you planning on doing with this handgun?". For personal carry I would go with a semi-auto. But you need to practice with it. Then again you were in the Marines, so you shot plenty of semi-auto. Hunting and general shooting, .357, but I wouldn't go with a very small sized barrel. Shorter barrel is harder to aim very accurately. I shoot better with a 6" barrel than my 4" barrel, both are S&W 686's. Longer sighting plane. The revolver is more bulkier to carry than a semi, more harder to conseal as well. Besides, whats nice about a 357 and 44's is you can shoot the smaller loads out of some these! Can save you some money down the road! If I were to buy a new semi, it would be something in a 40 caliber. I have a S&W 5906 9mm. Its ok, but now I would rather have the 40. JMO. Another thing you might want to consider is reloading. When I used too shoot some pistol competition. I have a Dillon Square Deal-B reloader, I have paid for this press fives over or more in reloading my own ammo. HarvDog
Re: Still considering a pistol Besides just wanting a pistol I guess I'm considering one for personal protection and some general shooting. I really thought I wanted a semi-auto for my first pistol but I'm leaning towards the revolvers for the bigger punch in the 357 mag or 44 mag and they seem to be somewhat less expensive. Thoughts on Rugers?
Guest ronin
Re: Still considering a pistol You might be able to save a little money by going with a .38 rather than the 357. This really applies to the snub guns which don't allow for the full potential of most .357 loads. If your stuck on the magnums you should really consider going with a longer barrel. If the snub nose is the key feature you might as well stick with the .38. 38 and 357 are the same bullet but different cartridge. Rugers are fine pistols. I also like Colt, S&W, and Taurus. With the availability of some really good .44 special ammo and the ability to shoot full house .44 mag ammo this gun can do it all. If I were looking to carry a big bore revolver in a steel frame model this would my first choice. hangunnr

The place I bought mine from only had it in a 2 1/4" barrel and Ruger only makes that gun in one other size 3 1/16". I wanted something around 4"...so...I went with the 6" barrell.
