Ever get run over by a herd of cows?

I never did, but it was so close one time i thought i was a goner. This happened several yrs. back....I was walking out one evening after a hunt. It was shotgun season and as i was making my way to the truck i had to cross a field with beef cattle in it. I was about halfway across when i heard them running, it didn't take me long to realize that the whole herd was running right at me! shocked.gifcrazy.gif

man! talk about sweating bullets....there i was in the middle of a 20 acre field and approx. 30-40 cows were closing the distance...FAST!

I was so close to pulling the trigger.....but instead started hollering and waving my arms crazy.gifsmirk.gif...they did stop...suddenly, about 15 yds. away. you can imagine how nervous i was as i S-L-O-W-L-Y made my way around them...my gun pointed at them the whole way around. LOL smirk.gif... i made it out, but WHEW! grin.gif

now everytime i have to walk thru a pasture field with cows in it, i am EXTREMELY jumpy grin.gif.... anyone else have this problem or am i a pansy?? tongue.gif

Nope its scary alright.

I was dropping my kids off to the in-laws one day and they own a dairy farm. I looked out and saw quite a few cows coming up thier back lawn so I went out with my father-in-law to help get them back threw the fence.

I am no farm boy thats for sure and the shear size of them intimidates me, and they must of sensed that because they kept rushing me.

Well I decided I was being useless (again) and to go and hold open the fence so my F-i-L could herd them back threw.

Long story short -I ran. LOL

No way was that fence opening gonna keep those cows from running me down and it didnt either cause they broken down two more sections coming threw that one.

Not to mention I stepped on a ground bees nest in the process.

Last time I "helped" him on the farm. LOL

That's funny VT Cows will usually stop if you let them know your boss, unless you get a really mean one. If you can get ahold of their ear and just twist the holy crap out of it they'll do just about anything you want them to. Not very PETA friendly, but it works for me, and I'm a little guy.

Try running with a new born calf in your arms and it's mama and the rest of the herd tracking you down all the way back to the barn...... crazy.gifcrazy.gif,,,,Cows a just plain dumb,,,,after my last bout with a red&white Holstien, that caused me 26 stitches in the groin from being kicked by her,,,,,,I joined the ARMY,,,,,way less painful.... grin.gifgrin.gif

evil cows... the farm i hunt only has about 12 or so and one bull...hes usually pretty layed back and will let you walk by but in the dark i hate walking through the pasture! and they are always laying right in front of the gate i need through so i end up having to climb through the barb wire fence to go around them!

Not exactly run over but me, my brother, and my brother in law were dragging my first bowkill buck out one night and somehow walked right into the middle of the farmers small herd of longhorns. They proceeded to surround us.Im pretty sure they were just curious what we were doing but them horns sure looked intimidating in the flashlights shocked.gifgrin.gif

I can't believe no one has jumped on this opportunity yet! grin.gif

I had one of my uncle's herds do that to me when I was walking out in the dark without a flashlight in bowseason when I was 16. It definitely puts you on full alert, but I've helped him with them enough that it doesn't bother me much. Just let them know who is higher on the food chain. wink.gif

that is why you always keep a hamburger in your hunting jacket. just pull it out, look sternly at the cows, and say oh keep coming &%#*%(@#&@.... you'll end up making a bunch of these. it makes them turn around an head out right away.

Re: Ever get run over by a herd of cows?

actually I have been run down by a herd once. When I was 16 I had the terrible task of rounding up all the heffers that had run wild in the pasture for the last year. There was about 8 of us to do the job. When we finally go the herd together and running in the right direction, the lead heffer turned and run straight at me. I nailed her with a ball bat and dropped her, but the other 15 or so that were following knocked me silly. No broken bones or anything like that, but I was beat to crap - - Boy did that heffer taste good !

Re: Ever get run over by a herd of cows?

I know exactly where your coming from. smirk.gif I remember about 3 years ago it was rifle season and I was making my walk to the gun shack in the very back of our hunting property before daylight. I've walked this path several times and pretty much knew it like the back of my hand so I didnt bother with a flashlight. Well you walk a fence line probably close to 800 yards and the first 400 yards or so is an old corn field and the other side is a cow pasture. Well once you get to the back half it turns into a thick hardwoods on both sides. Anyways, I continued walking and was in the wooded part in the dark and was about 150 yards from the gun shack. I was walking slow and quietly when all of a sudden just on the other side of the fence from me, not 5 feet away, a HUGE loud crash in the brush and foot steps. I about had a heart attack and sprinted the last 150 yards to the gun shack. I got inside, locked the door, turned on a light and never opened the windows until after i could see the sun shining through the cracks of the windows. I had no clue what the big crash was. Well after about 10am or so, i got up and went back to where the loud crash was to find out what it was and you guessed it, a stupid cow! He was still in the same gereal area and I saw his foot prints in the mud. Boy did I feel like an idiot. smirk.giftongue.gif

Re: Ever get run over by a herd of cows?

One time a bunch of deer got by me so I asked my driver to wait till I got around them and she would drive them to me again. I started running across a cow pasture to get ahead of the deer. I then came to a complete stop when this huge bull was staring at me. So I froze and filled my pants. I noticed that the only thing stopping him was some baling twine around his neck was hooked to a bush. He thought he was tangled. So a walked slowly past him but I was behind schedule. I did not make it to the watch on time and the buck ran after a doe blew me. So I shot the doe grin.gif When I got the deer back to the farm Norm told me that bull would have stomped me if he got the chance
