Help! Removing gun tape

I need your help! I had some camo tape on my gun from turkey season. It is basically camo athletic tape to describe the type. Anyway I removed it in order to get my gun ready for squirrel season and make sure there is no rust. The tape left a bunch of sticky tape residue; how do I get it off? My mom suggested acetone but I do not know if that will take the gun paint off also or not. If any of you know how to get this junk off, please let me know! Thanks!

Re: Help! Removing gun tape

there is a product made by 3M. It is called glue and adhesive remover, I believe. It is only available by the quart, and It isn't real cheap. but, it works real well. It is available at most any auto parts store. You can also try rubbing alcohol. That might work too.

Re: Help! Removing gun tape

I have had no luck with rubbing alchol or acetone on tape glues..

WD-40 seems to cut it the best but ya still gotta use some elbow grease depending on the tape glue your removing..

This may work and is so easy its stupid.

Take some of the same tape but new off the roll. Fold it a few time with the sticky out and dab it quickly on and off the gunked up area. The new sticky glue will grab the old and pull it off. It takes time but this works too.

It may not work though if you put other chemically on it already.

But worth a try.

Re: Help! Removing gun tape

I use Goo Gone for everything. Be careful though to read the directions in case it effects blueing. I need to try it to clean up my bow. I too put some moleskin on my riser but I want to see if it will take off the Matthews realtree pattern. I think that would help on the trade in value.

try goo- gone or a product called goof-off. afterwards oil the surface with Breakfree CLP or good gun oil of your choice no matter which thinner/ solvent is used
