huntinsonovagun
Hung a stand where I thought the deer might move through (where i saw the 2 cross the road for those who read my journal) Had 2 button bucks come in almost immediatly, around 4:30. Bedded down and browsed around me for 2 hours!!! Finally, a doe comes by at 6:30, steps in my lane, I take my time, aim, release. First sounds sounds like a stick. I watch her she runs a little ways, then acts like nothing happened. I thought I missed, saw my fletchingin the ground, so I sit a while longer. I use my "CAN" little buttons come running to it!! I get down, go get my arrow, no blood, but there is hair and a little clear fluid with some kind of "meat". Not sure if it is lung or what. No blood at all!! I go to truck and get a flashlight, come back and start looking, still no blood. Oh yeah, when I shot, looked high and far back. Anyway, finally find some blood and it is tough following, then the unthinkable......RAIN!! I loosed the trail several times, but now it is in some thick stuff,so I finally gave up. I'll be back in the morning looking, but she will either be tore up by coyotes, or alive. I am still not convinced it was a lethal shot. Oh, no smell on the arrow at all either!! Light colored hairs it looked like. Oh, first blood I found was real dark and watery, then all the rest of blood I found was bright red, but small amounts. I am wondering if I got between the lung and spine???? Also wondering if the "stick" I heard was a rib breaking?? My arrow was kicked to the left (the direction she was facing). Not sure if she ducked and went forward, causing this or what. Helps to get it off my chest. Hope I can find her. When she ran off, then stopped, I did not see any damage, making me think I missed, but the arrow and blood proves otherwise. I'll be looking in the morning. When it rains it pours.....good and bad. these are the first deer I have seen on stand all season.
elkoholic
Re: Stuck a Doe, not down yet Sounds like a muscle hit to me. Possibly deflected of a branch (the sound you heard) or could have been high hit that clipped the spine. I suspect a much lower hit because of the light colored hair. Due to the lack of smell on the arrow, I doubt a liver or stomach/intestine hit. Best you can do is give it the old college try and do a thorough search in the morning. Sometimes the evidence on the arrow does not tell the whole tale. Good luck!

VTbowman
Re: Stuck a Doe, not down yet Based on the hairs, I too am leaning towards a real low hit. That and add the lack of bad smell and the clear fluid you may of just nicked her underside. The clear fluid could be milk. (???) The meat could be teat! LOL (Oh thats not funny.. Owch!) Seriously you may of deflected of a stick (the sound you heard) and just clipped her real low. My feeling is she will live but may not want to breast feed anytime more.... buckbuster11
Re: Stuck a Doe, not down yet I was going to say gut shot until you said I didnt smell. It's possible you may have just grazed her belly, that would explain why she didnt react like she was hit.
huntinsonovagun
Re: Stuck a Doe, not down yet Well, I didn't find her. I feel terrible. I have heard eveyone looses a deer, but I never thought I would. Just too much rain and not enough blood. I think I hit her high in the back. She didn't act hit, but I think she will live. I did a body search, but found nothing. I really feel bad, and I will always have that "bad" shot in my head. Nothing more I can do. Now I am not sure if I should hunt the same stand tonight or not. Originally I thought I would give it a rest, but there was a deer in there this morning!! They are in there for the acorns I know!! I don't want to pressure them too hard, but I don't want them to finish off the acorns before I get another chance to hunt there, which will be 2 weeks from now. Well, I feel like crap, so I am going to shoot my bow. Man I am so sorry for wounding this deer........
buckbuster11
Re: Stuck a Doe, not down yet Dont worry bud, it happens to everyone at some point. It's happened to me a few times. It takes a while to get over that sick feeling, but you just have to shake it off and get back out there.
