a bit of advice!!

there has been a few questions the last while by new hunters asking abotu the great sport of coyote hunting, I will try to give a start for them!! I wish I would of had soemone to give me ideas when I started otu, I started with a old call and 2 years without a coyote, then from each year got better and better with the help of practice and people helping me out on the net!!I would like to pass a bit along now!!

First off find the coyotes!!!! knwo from previose years, early season spotting, hearing them howling ect were they are at, they like to keep otu of the open as much as possable, but youc an call them into a opening!! Phone people you know or stop at ranchers and ask, listen at nights for howling, lots of way, the bissest problem with poepl not gettign coyotes is calling were none can hear you!!! I went out with a friend from Minn last year huntign and he had a siren, was it awsoem the whole countryside lit up with howling, worked great only problem is you want to be miles away from the nearest farm or house of you will be the hunted I am sure!! Also you can use a locater howl, you can use a tape, cd, or blow them with soem practice, only problem I have with them is soemtimes they will not anser and coem in,I do not like using these before light like I did the siren that one time!! Just scared to have one coem in and not see it!!

its the night before you are goin out, think abotu were you are huntign, different spots to call from, you want a location that had good visability,if not all around try your best to have the spot downwind of you clear, chances are the coyote will try to get downwind, and if he does you will ahve a poke before he winds you!!once you have your spots picked out go to bed and try to sleep, you will be seeing coyotes jumpin over fences LOL!! In the mornign, check the wind, try to park a long ways away from were you will call and walk in with the wind in your face keeping from skylining yourself!!kepe in the shadows if at all possable,[i have called right from the door of the truck to a mile away, mile away is best luck but soemtimes with lack of tiem need to be closer,I woudl say be 1/4 mile away at least for best luck] BTW when drivign in be slow and quiet,I have alot better luck parking on a main road and walking in than going down a beaten old path away from the main roads, I believe a coyote is used to the sound of the vehicles on the main road and not on the old trails!!Park in a low spot if at all possable,be quiet again, no sterio, don't slam the doot, put the clip in quietly ect, they are smart animals!! walk slowly ot your location ,again wind in your face, get set up in a spot that is low, you do not want to be skylined , sun in face or shining off of scope,, I prefer under a nice size tree, with back to a overgrown fence, ot lieing belly down on a tall hill,I like thsi one with the electronic caller but not mouth calls, I move to much and you will be spotted, if the caller is 30 yards away it takes attention off of you and you can move a bit more!!

Ok now you are set up start off with a few calls quietly, never know if one is hidden under a tree 200 yards away!!let be for a few minutes watching closly, then go louder and louder in abotu 45 second sessions with a few minutes in between!! if in thicker brush after 15 minutes or so quiet back down or use a mouse squeeker, never know if one is close!! I hhardly ever stay on a stand more that 20 minutes but then I do stand up and miss a few every year that were coming in slow!My suggestion is once you think its tiem to leave give it 5 more minutes, will make a difference one day for sure!! There are millions of different suequences that can be used, I change up with the seasons and with location, all it takes is a bit of practice and knwo what the coyotes are liking and you will catch on, I liek using a howler with the distree calls!!

the calls!! What can I say, there are closed reeds, open reeds, bellow and electronic, I ahve used them all and like the sound of the closed reed better for a distress call but for the howlers it will only be a open reed, I love the ability it gives you to bark, howlchallange barks and howls, greetign howls, distress calls, woulded calls, all of these have there place but I would recommend a beginner just gettign a bellow call[scotch makes them] or a electronic call even though I am not a believer in them to much, I think to many calls sound the same and the coyote gets warry to them!even with a little practice closed reeds are easy to use, Just remember when making a distress call, put lots of emotion into it, the more you do the morre will come out of the end, you want that call to sound like a rabbit with blood gurgling out of his mouth!!You do this by using the open hand at the end of the call , open and lose ti to make quivers and high and low pitches, the more emothion the better chances to get one convinced to coem for a free meal!! I like using the howler to amke it sound liek a coyote is killing the rabbit, I will bark a few distress, bark odd short howl bark, distress ect, really works great for me!!

You can get great tapes tyo help out on the right sounds, and also on the net find websites to give ideas of what the sounds are supposed to sound like, don't try to be exact,I have had coyotes coem into soem of my worst mistakes I ever made while calling, one tiem had a pair coem in on me when I blew a howler wrong and it made a long crappy sound, got a double, they ran in liek they were on fire!!

don't know what else to say other than practice, find the coyotes, know how to get to a calling spot, call, and shoot them!!nothing to it! cool.gif another thing, camo, you shoudl be covered up soemhow, face mask, keep movement ot a minumum, camo your gun or at least keep it from shining, try not to call right into the sun, keep low gettign to your stand, use soem sort of steading device, i use shootign sticks becouse they can be moved quick if a coyote is coeming around on you, only thing is have soemthign to steady you, a 200 yard coyote is not easy free hand and not all shots are close, soem will charge right in, the next one will sneek in and the next one will sit back at 300 yards and bark, never knwo what they will do, you will ahve to learn from experiance when to shoot, usually a bark will stop them but soemtimes you will have one heading to a lowspot out of site you will ahve to decide to shoot or wait,he may get in and not coem out never know!

One more quick comment, you have 2 or more comeing in and you shoot one get a howler out and start making a hurt coyote sound, it sounds just like when you step on a dogs tail, chances are the coyote will stop and possable even coem back in,next off if only one came in and you shoot it down't stop calling there may be another one behind, I have called 3 in one stand all about 5 minutes apart, and the second one stopped to smell the dead one befor ehe dropped!!

Biggest thign with coyote huntign is don't be dissapointed, not every stand has coyotes in hearing range, soem days I will hit 12 or more stands and not have a single coyote next tiem I will hit the smae stands and see one at every 3 or 4 attempts!I would say I have coyotes being seen at abotu 25-30% of the stands I call from!soem days none and the next nearly every one, don't try to figure out why couse peopel have with no luck LOL! Next off I go otucalling and call from daylight to dark, i do not stop in the afternoon, sure I have better luck in the mornigns and night but still get my fair share in the afternnon also, COYOTES WILL CALL ALL DAY!!

Best of luck I sure hope thsi helps soemone out a bit,I bet a few of you ahve a few more suggestions I missed , please put them down, my 2 fingers and brain are gettin knumb now! grin.gif

Good luck coyote hunting!!!!!!!!

Re: a bit of advice!!

I personally have tried everythign for scent controal nothign ever works 100% I use alot of skunk pee and put it downwind, jsut like deer huntign the biggest thing I try to do with every stand is work it so the coyote has to show himself before he gets downwind, if a person thinks of that on every satnd it really helps!! Wiht decoys, I ahd a buddy from minncome up last fall and it was not even really cold and the batteries kept dieing,Battery powered deeks are not for the colder northern climate LOL!!I do use a stuffed toy rabbit if the callign gets tough also!!

Thanks alot for the extra advise,!!I am sure there is lots I missed so if anyone has any feel free to post it, the idea is tryign to help the beginners out a bit!!

Re: a bit of advice!!

jcwa might be better to anser your question about your area but what I find up here if coyotes are in a area its for a reason, whether its bedding or lots of food, I also find soem of these areas are travel roads, the coyotes seem to like to travel soem edges, whether its a lake, slough or even heavy timber!!!I have certain honey holes that i see coyotes nearly every time out, I have one area or a square mile i took out just about 20 last winter, I went back last week and had a pair coem in and seen 2 right from the road!! Good luck with the coyotes!!
