MOCK SCRAPES....Who Uses Them ??

Got me wondering as I was setting 4 mock scrapes out recently......is this becoming a lost art, or are there just that few of people out there that use them ??

I like to kinda experiment every year.....find out what works as far as scent......does one location see more activity than others...etc....

One thing is for sure, as Bucks are coming back into their fall territories.....now is the time to "plant" them......it sure get's the big boys curious who is in the territory..... smile.gif

Re: MOCK SCRAPES....Who Uses Them ??

I usually wait till the first real scrape shows up. Then I'll make a mock one near an ambush sight. Earlier in the year I'll sprinkle some non rutting buck urine in the real scrape to get the deers curiousity and then sprinkle it in the mock scrape. As the season progresses I will keep freshening it until the time is right and I'll stick some rutting buck urine in both the scrapes.

While I can't be 100% sure it's my fault, I do notice a dramatic increase in rubs and natural scrapes once I start using the rutting buck urine. I also notice that there are always a lot of tracks in the scrapes I make, so I guess I am not alarming anything.

I make mock scrapes and set up my trail camera on it. I have had deer check it out which is neat. I usually put one near my stand near rubs or real scrapes. Deer will check them out.

I also put my "scent dripper" over it to get a better effect.

I usually do it towards the end of October.

i used to use them all the time . but since i had to switch places to hunt last year i didnt put any out.. this year i will make a few for sure...

they definately do attract bucks when the bucks are on the move .. i love to put them in bottle necks where the buck movement is narrowed down to a specific crossing..

For the guys that use them do you use the mock scrape dirt? or how do you make them? Come on tell me your sercects I won't tell a soul

I use the dirt that is there........

First thing is I save up baby food jars (preferably) and film canisters if nothing else......pill bottles, etc...will also work nicely. I remove the cap and poke 3-4 holes in the lid.......I fill the inside with cotton balls (which will lengthen the active use of the scent)

When i get to field, i will then add the scent to my jars or canisters........I like to use 3 different scents......Active Scrape, any Buck Urine, and Trails End.......I have had fantastic luck with this combo. The cotton balls will soak up the scent and disperse it very slowly over the course of a month or so....it helps get the mock scrape noticed and utilized by the bucks of the area.

I remove (pull) all grass out in about a 2' square area........I then use a gardening trowel to dig a hole big enough to bury a baby food jar or film canister an inch or two under the surface. I then pack in around the edges of the jar or canister.....and then lightly sift some dirt over the top until everything is level again......then I sprinkle some additional scent around on the ground and even some up on the licking branch for inital attractant......

As October Approaches, i will sprinbkle some estrous scent and or doe urine into the scrapes ....as well as some buck in rut scent (like tarsal gland, etc...).......if i happen to be passing by on my way to a stand...... wink.gif

PS......rubber up also.....rubber boots, rubber gloves.....I even wear rain bibs, to keep my knees from leaving scent as I kneel while I'm setting things up.....
