Guest Phaseolus (BeanMan)
In the Big Game Forum Ryan H has been asking for elk hunting info. He'll need a good high altitude survival kit to keep in his day pack. Here is what I have in mine, hopefully you can give some good contributions that I have missed. it has to be small and lightweight and be able to save you when needed. Storm proof matches film can with cotton balls soaked in diesel fuel, tape lid shut! Whistle Water purification tablets Space bag (not a space blanket) 4 power bars 15 feet of light nylon string small flashlight (headlamps are great) with switch taped to prevent it form being turned on accidently. roll of athletic tape (deals with wounds or turned ankles) Ibuprofen small swiss army knife with saw blade Mine fits in a small red sutff sack about 4" by 8" and goes with me every hike or hunt I'm on. Lots of other essential stuff will be carried in your day pack. Stick to just the stuff you believe should be in a small survival bag. Palssonater
Re: Build a survival kit for RyanH A better alternative to using diesel fuel on the cotton balls would be to use Vaseline. Its a petroleum product, that is water proof, but burns like lantern when lit. Then you don't have to worry about the stench of diesel on anything. Make sure you have good boots! LifeNRA
Re: Build a survival kit for RyanH The GPS is what I would have said too! Also, EXTRA BATTERIES!!! Magnesium Fire Starter, I have started fires with this thing like you wouldnt believe! The magnesium burns white hot! Then you can keep the cotton balls DRY!!! Because this thing will fire up even when WET! Because water only makes the magnesium burn even more!!! I carry one of these in my pack while out in the mountains. You only need a knife to shave the magnesium into a little pile. Then use the knife again on the starter side to make a spark. Done, FIRE! Before using this product, I recommend starting a fire in a safe place so you know how it works! Dont wait until you need it! Palssonater
Re: Build a survival kit for RyanH Diesel fuel burns longer than gas and can be ignited easily. The vaseline is good cause it can be dunked under the water and will still light and burn like a lantern wick, if you just pull the frey the cotton ball apart a bit. I use this because if you put a couple in a film canister it adds nothing to you weight for the day. Not bulky at all. Also, I have a Strike Force. They are a Flint like starter that has the special waterproof bricks that can be under water for days and still light. I thought it was overkill until the day I needed it. But like the boys said, if you have a good GPS and don't get lost, you'll never need this stuff.

Guest Phaseolus (BeanMan)
Re: Build a survival kit for RyanH I tend to think of my survival kit as something that wlways goes in my pack. Other stuff like maps, water bottles, rainwear are not items in my survival kit but essential items in my pack. palssonator, thanks for thte tip on vaseline instead of smelly diesel fuel. That the klind of stuff I hoped to learn. Map and compass skill are essential because GPS units can crap out on you, mine did last week. Turkeygirl
Re: Build a survival kit for RyanH Moleskin: works good on blisters. You cut a piece off and cut a small circle in it and place it over the blister. A few Triangular bandages or Cravats: You can use them to make a sling for your arm or for making a splint or helping stabilize your shoulder if you injure it. Cell phone Extra batteries for the headlamp/flashlight A plastic tarp and some rope you can use to make a shelter if needed. Am I getting carried away, lol, I had an entire course on this stuff:-)
