fisherguy
Re: measuring bear The proper measurement of a bear hide is "Square" that is the average of the lenght from top of nose to tip of tail, and from the tip of on front paw across teh back to the tip of the other. This is supposed to be done on the hide, without stretching it to make it bigger.

Valkrie1357
Re: measuring bear If you see a paw print in the dirt/mud. And measure the width of the Front Pad & Add 1" to the Measurement, That is suppose to be Square Area a Hide will cover. This is just a good estimate of what the size of the Bears in the area you are hunting are. Think of how many times you have seen a BIG Bear Track in the Dirt/Mud & thought, Wonder How Big He Must Be!!! Big inland grizzlies Will Square Up to Eight Feet. Alaskan Browns up to 10 Feet Polar the Biggest @ 11 Feet NAHC States " When you have a Hide Laid Out Flat (Not Stretched) Measure the From Tip Of the Nose to the Tip of the Tail, Hair NOT included. Next without stretching the hide Measure from Tip to Tip of the Front Claws. Then Add these two measurements together & Divide by 2 & you will have the Square Measurement of Your Bear Hide. Valkrie1357
Re: measuring bear I came across this Bear Paw Print in the Mud when I was walking out from My Treestand to get My ATV, To go get the Outfitter to help me Track my Bear. We put 2 300 Ultra Mag Shells across the width of the Paw. The ATV Track is from the Outfitters ATV when he dropped me off that Afternoon, So I knew that this Track was fresh. I couldn't see this point on the trail from up in My Treestand, but this print was headed towards my stand. When we got back to this place on the trail I had left My seat cushion next to it so I could show the Outfitter & He was amazed at the size. He said were on to One Big Bear if that is his Paw Print. It turned out that my Bear was laying maybe only 30 Yards from this Paw Print in the mud, but took the long way to get there, and at one point in time I was probably 10 - 15 Yards from where he was laying, while on my way to the ATV!!! OHHHH AHHHH !!!!!!!! Took this Black Bear 6-4-05 / 9:05 PM @ Grandview Outfitters, Grandview Manitoba. 475 Lbs, Skull Measures 21 7/16ths inches. http://www.grandviewoutfitters.ca/photo.htm My First Time Bear Hunt, Turned into the Dream Hunt of My Life. Two of these 300 Ultra Mag shells were laid end to end, across the width of the Bear Paw Print I Shot. About an 1" was out side of the Paw Print. Using this as a guide for Measuring the Square of a Bear hide by just seeing a Paw Print, So roughly six inches across the paw plus 1" would equal an almost Seven Foot Square Bear Rug. My Taxidermist said My rug was going to be just short of 7' Square. Valkrie1357

Shaun_300
Re: measuring bear Wow Valkrie, that is a HUGE bear! My uncle is an outfitter here in Eastern Ontario, one guy from southern Ohio got one with the bow that weighted 422lbs, and I thought THAT was big! 475 is gigantic. The one the guy got here is either 1st or 2nd for the Ontario Record for a Black bear taken with the bow.
