Guest CTJohnB
Hey All, I was wondering if I can get some words of wisdom regarding my shot at my first Deer with a bow this year. I have heard a few things from other people regarding where to aim be it high or Low? I have heard that deer either jump or Duck when they hear the release from an arrow! I have bought and watched 4 hunting videos and studied them in slow motion for hours, how ever most of the footage is from hunting down South verses New England. Where I live,( if they behave differently in fields and open land verses thick Brush?) is it a deer's instinct to Jump Or Duck! when shot at with a bow? I have been shooting my bow every week since last fall so as for getting in the zone, well I am there happy to say I am holding a 4" grouping at 40 yards consecutively, with a 13 year old PSE but do you aim for the spine and hope they Jump or do you aim at the heart in case they Duck! I am stumped on this one so any and all words of wisdom from others would be greatly appreciated. Thank You all. John
archerjg
Re: Jump or Duck? I aim to center punch the lungs or just a hair low for the heart. Most of the deer that I have seen have not moved at all, but that is not always the case. Archerjg
HeviShot
Re: Jump or Duck? Get your bow quiet and shoot at the vitals. You may also need to shoot from an elevated position,it's not the same in the air.
GWSmith
Re: Jump or Duck? Watch a few Primos Truth Video's In Truth 7 & 8 They actually show the shot in slow motion with a line acrossed the top of the deers back. Every deer "Ducked" down seemingly to "Load up their legs or to turn quickly". I think what you may be refferring to is what I call "The Launch"(as in Off Like A Rocket). Try this idea and see if it makes sense to you: Calmly Stand Straight (eating a veggie sandwich-work with me here a little bit-think like a deer) Now without bending your legs or your ankles in any way...try to jump...LOL So now try doing the same thing after bending your legs. OK...Did the level of your head stay the same or did it drop slightly just before you launched? You could try to add more realism to this experiment too that may sound like a shot from a weapon to a deer. Have one of your family members drop a frying pan on the floor from behind you and see what happens...LOL Oh Yeah...You may jump alright...but you will bend your legs to do so. Guest Finn
Re: Jump or Duck? I aim 1/3 up from the bottom of the deer, just behind the front leg. Most of the time, the deer doesn't move and my bow is not a speed bow.
joebobhunter4
Re: Jump or Duck? usually ur arrow is fast enough and they are going to duck... they duck and jump but your arrow should be there before they start getting up to jump... so is aim right at his heart and if you dont hit the all the good organs are in the area you should hit him... good luck! hope this helps
BowJoe
Re: Jump or Duck? I would just aim at the point tight behind the shoulder. Like the others were saying, if the deer lowers his body to jump you are on the lungs if he comes back up then you are back on the heart again. If the deer is 30 yds or less then he probably won't have enough time to jump completely out of the way. If he is beyond 30 yds then he may not even hear the shot ...at least not in time. Once sound travels 90 feet the arrow is almost there by the time the deer hears it.
Guest CTJohnB
Re: Jump or Duck? HAHAHAHA LMAO< Thanks GW that was too funny, I asked my 5 yo daughter to help me with this and by the way we never said a word to MOM!!! So as I waited for my daughter to stalk me, as if I was a deer Which I might add was totally enjoyable for her as well due to the fact she wants to sit in the tree stand with me when I go and is dying to go deer hunting with me (she is one heck of a trout fisherwoman now as is), I think it is Too Cool that my daughter is into the outdoors, well any way As she crept up on me. I was watching my wife who again had NO IDEA, in order to study her reaction as well and let me tell you, Do Not Ever keep your wife in the dark when you conduct such a study such as this! exspecially when you have a 5 yo to be responsible for the noise, LOL I cant stop laughing, My wife ducked the jumped and screamed and did a Dance...!!!! like you cannot imagine Holy smoke that was so dam fun. You had to be there I only wish I had set up the video recorder for that one a definite runner up for a winner, I get your point GREAT Experiment, I thought you all might get a laugh from this one. I can totally relate to the think Like a deer theory because I just have been granted permission for private land and as I was pondering the thought of which tree to use and what would be the best cover area with in the tree line for visibility and such my wife's uncle who is a hard core hunter my inspiration for getting into bow hunting was with me and said you must feel and see what the deer do. He says walk like one!! So I did and let me tell you what a different view of sight you have from being on all 4's verses on 2 of course then land owners wife and kids come around the corner and hhhhmmmm, well there was some explaining to do. hahaha it was just to funny.. Great, "Now my mother in laws friends thinks I am nuttier than a fruit cake!" LOL Its all Good.

snapper
Re: Jump or Duck? [ QUOTE ] Once sound travels 90 feet the arrow is almost there by the time the deer hears it. [/ QUOTE ] Speed of sound is something like 2,900 feet per second...that doesn't slow down. Even a fast bow is only 300 fps and thats right out of the bow...the arrow is losing speed from the start. The deer will hear and could react (forget the actual reaction time) within 90 feet. I like to aim for the heart...if the deer doesn't react to the sound of my bow/arrow...I'll get a heart shot. If the deer does react...then I'll double lung it when it ducks.
ranchand99
Re: Jump or Duck? I have never had one jump.Even though they call it jumping the string.Usually they are dropping down, and building up energy to bounce away. You should aim low on a deer that you think is too alert. The farther the deer is,and more alert he is the more of a chance you have of him jumping the string. For that reason most people aim for the heart. If he doesn't move you still get the heart. If he does you get a high lung or possibly a spine shot.I try not to shoot over 30yds.If a deer is less than 25 they really can't get out of the way.IMO. Tominator
Re: Jump or Duck? Aim dead on IMHO. If they duck, you're good, if they don't you're good, if they jump, you're good.

Guest deadeye270
Re: Jump or Duck? You'll find that deer 20-25 yards or less will "duck" and load up trying to get away fom an ambush. Deer at 30+ will pop their head up (not duck and load up) to see where the noise came from because they know they can escape from any predator with a 30+ yd head start. By the time they hear the arrow and figure out to run they are already hit. Just my opinion.
