I've heard that D.I.Y is the only way to go ,because butcher shops pose the chance that you may not get your deer back.Is that true? If it is i"ll try it myself this year.

Re: deer processing, butcher or do it your self ?

When I first started deer hunting I used to take my deer to a local butcher, and he did a pretty good job for a fairly cheap price. However I wanted to learn how to butcher it myself so I wrote to the NY State Environmental Conservation Dept. and for $1.00 they sent me a butchering manual complete with step by step pictures. Best dollar I ever spent ! The first thing that amazed me was how much more meat I wound up getting off my deer. The second thing that amazed me was how easy it was do. The other advantage was that there were more than a few times where I harvested a deer and the weather was much to warm to let it hang. Knowing how to butcher it permitted me to process the deer right away, get it in the freezer, and get back to hunting. Definately do it yourself, you won't be sorry. Good hunting.

I take it to a guy on my way to work. Hes lisenced but doenst advertise so he only does a few deer a year. Hes the meat cutting manager at a Kroger store and does it on the side for a little extra money. He charges $35 a deer and saves me ALOT of time, a BIG mess, and ALOT of cut up hands and fingers. tongue.gif

Both. There is a cheap place that butchers deer right across the road from my house so we normally take it there. However, there are times during the rifle season when every butcher shop in the county is filled up and won't take any more deer. In those cases, we do them ourselves.
