Guest ronin
So far, I have been impressed with all of the short cartridges I have got my hands on. I just picked up the new .325 for a customer last week. Looking forward to seeing it in action.
doubleA
Re: short and fast! While the 300 WSM is a good cartridge...., that is it gets comparable velociities with less powder, it doesnt compare with the "ultra mag" or 30-378 WBY. At best it's even with the 300 Win with as you said ligher bullets ie 180 gr and under. Even the old. 300 Wby has a good velocity edge overf the 300 WSM. This said the 300 WSM is a dandy of a cartridge, I just picked one up in a Kimber 8400. Life is good, Give God the Glory, doubleA
AJ
Re: short and fast! [ QUOTE ] ballistic charts show that it compares to the ultra mag until u get into the heavier bullets....and it does so with lots less recoil and noise. [/ QUOTE ] Sorry Buddy, it does not come close to the 300 RUM. It is comparable to the SAUM, edging it just a little in velocity. The WSM is about equal to the standard .300 Win Mag. While it takes slightly less powder, it averages the same recoil since the guns are lighter. Nothing is free. You want increased velocity, you get more recoil. No and's, if's or but's. They are ok, but for deer, they won't do anything your .270 Win Sendaro won't.
Shaun_300
Re: short and fast! I have a .300 WSM in Browning BLR. I agree, defiently great ballistics, smaller shell, quite a bit less recoil than my Win Mag. So far I really like the gun and the way it shoots. doubleA
Re: short and fast! Sendero, I just replied to your post, that's all. If you take that as "biting you head off" I am sorry for that. You have your opinion and others have theirs. I have nine 30 caliber rifles ranging from the 30-30 through a 30-378 Wby Imp. so I am saying that I have some experince with the ballistics of them in the real world. While the various ballistic tables are in general good, they can only be used as a guide, actual perfromance can vary greatly in a personal firearm. There are so many variables that can affect ballistics in a particular rifle/cartridge. Well I could go on and on but on the contrary I find these forums very helpfull, AJ has a wealth of information to share. Again the 300 WSM is a good cartridge, it fills the gap between the 30-06 and 300 Win Mag nicely. AJ
Re: short and fast! How do you like the RUM? I almost had myself talked into a Sendaro in 338 RUM. For the money, I can build one, and know what I am getting, so I passed.
AJ
Re: short and fast! I have a custom 300 Wby that has a 28" barrel. I get 300 RUM factory ammo ballistics. I shoot the 180 gr Scirocco 3350 fps. The 180 is a great choice in these cartridges.
AJ
Re: short and fast! I would not use the Ballistic Silvertips as they are just Ballistic Tips. They are too fragile for that gun unless you are shooting over 400 yards all the time. The SST will also be similar. The Interbond may hold up slightly better, but I would not use them for shots under 200 yards with the RUM. Possibly the Accubond in 180 gr or the 200 gr if you just had to have a heavier bullet. I really can't see why you would.
