why do we hunt?

i know all states are starting these regulations about only being able to take bucks with so many antlers and everything. which i like this rule but doesn't that make us be more trophy hunters than meat hunters. what is everyones point of view on this. we all have our own opinions and i see both sides.

Re: why do we hunt?

I honestly think we are going in the wrong direction. Thats why for the last year or two I've been pretty much against antler restrictions and QDM for that matter.

One thing I can not stand is when somebody gets blasted for shooting a buck that doesnt have a certain score, or isnt old enough according to someone else's standards. Thats the kind of stuff I think could really kill the sport. Its happening all the time now, and you'll see it in these forums as well.

Something else that makes me cringe is all these hunting videos that show hunters running (literally) up to there freshly killed rack (forgetting there was a deer attached) and drooling all over it without a mention of the animal itself, the meat, the hunt or anything else. In fact, I hate that so much I actually get embarrassed watching something like that anymore.

Now I like a big buck as much as the next guy, and I'll pass up my fair share of smaller ones every year. But thats my way of making it a little more challenging for myself. The hunt itself and the meat that comes as a result of it should always be the bottom line, the rack is just a little icing on the cake. But thats not the way it is anymore, and its going to get worse.

Re: why do we hunt?

I believe that there is more to the story than just wanting bigger bucks. QDM also means maintaining a more natural buck to doe ratio along with a healthy doe to fawn ratio and a more natural age structure among the buck population. The result of such management is larger, both body and antler size, buck, which is a nice plus. I do not think that anyone could find fault with reducing the doe population in areas overrun with deer, as it is the only affective way of controlling an out of control deer population. Personally, I hunt not to fill the freezer (it would be cheaper to buy a half of beef), but for the adrenaline rush I get along with the sheer pleasure of being out in the woods. Let me ask the questions: Do you like to hunt regardless of the outcome or do you feel the need to kill something to prove you "hunted"? If you truly feel the need to fill the freezer, would not a doe be just as good as a yearling buck? If it is a little harder to get a buck because you are hunting an older, wiser animal are you not ready to accept the challenge? While we may not all agree, looking at the other side is not a bad idea. I will not put someone down for shooting a yearling as I am a firm believer that any animal taken legally is a "trophy".

Re: why do we hunt?

When it comes to these kinds of discussions, remember that forum members perspectives most likely come from what their herd condition in their local hunting area is like. In areas where you are likely to see only one buck per season or less, you are likely not going to be all that interested in AR. Also, if you are in an area that is really hurting for deer population in general, you probably are not going to be very interested in the idea of harvesting does. Conversely, if your hunting area has deer running all over the place, and you are likely to see many different bucks in the course of a season, shooting does and passing immature bucks, probably sounds like a pretty good idea. That's what makes the opinions on this stuff so varied and at times, so heated.

Re: why do we hunt?

First of all I hunt because it is part of me. It's a basic human instinct no differrent than eating or breathing but more apparent in some, like me and most of you than others. I truly love the total experience of hunting whether I kill deer or not. It's one of the few truly peaceful experiences available where I can just sit back and enjoy all of God's natural creations.

As far as antler quality, etc., I don't impose my harvest standards on anyone else. A trophy is in the eye of the beholder as far as I'm concerned. If they are happy with the deer they kill, I'm happy for them. My personal attitude is I can get all the meat I want from legally killing does to better manage the herd on our property. As far as bucks are concerned, I'd rather let the young bucks walk and hunt for mature bucks. It's just a don't harvest the crop until it's ripe attude for me. What others want to do is their option where they choose to hunt. smirk.gif

Took the words right out of my mouth.

There is nothing better than being in the woods at sun-up/sun-down to witness the night-time/day-time inhabitors of the forest and field tucking in for a nap and hearing and seeing all the day-light/night-time creatures come to life. It amazes me every single time and I never get tired of it. Everything in between those two magical times of the day are just an added bonus.

The hunting part of it all is just an added bonus. I love the dreaming, the planning, the practicing and the learning experiences that it involves. Bringing home a trophy and some meat for the freezer is just the added bonus at the end of everything else that makes it so wonderful.

And Yes...coffee does taste better out in a cold deer stand grin.gif
