Guys, I'm so sad, i took my 2 year old horse colt to the vet cuz he was getting sick and he does a check on him and sends off blood and what not then we took him back today to talk to the vet about the blood work and everything and he tells me he's got a serious bacteria problem and that he has a 25% chance of making it. The vet said to save him it's gonna cost us a couple of thousand and we don't have that kinda money to pump minerals and vitamins in him. He's been losing weight and acting depressed and the vet said that he's going through some serious pain. He told me that I could let him die at home or he could put him down there.

I chose euthenasia, because its the humaine way to go. I can't believe that this lil 2 year old, my baby is going to be put to sleep. It's not fair!!!!! The vet said there was nothing I could do...... but that dosn't help. I'm sorry guys I just needed to kinda get this off my shoulders, thanks for being here for me. I know its not as major as the hurricane victims, but this is as tragic as it gets for me. frown.gif

Re: It\'s not fair!!!!!

I am very sorry to hear about your 2 yr. old.

I think you probably have a good Vet, but let me relate a little problem that came up here in our little rural community.

We had 3 Vets in two clinics here. One was operated by an old Dr. and his son and had been here for many years.

A new Vet moved into town and a family with an expensive horse ran into the same scenario as you have, with the the new Vet's clinic. About 3 months after the family was given the bad news, they were called by an alert employee at the local auction barn.

Their registered tattoo was discovered on a horse that was being put up for sale by the new Vet.

It was indeed their horse, and the horse had not been put down after all, but had been nursed back to health by the new Vet.

We are back to only one Vet clinic with the old Vet and his son. The new Vet was prosecuted, moved out of town and no one seems to know where he went.

These are the types of professionals that give dogdoc and other fine veterinarians a bad name.

I am reasonably sure this is not the case in your situation but I thought I would give a "heads up" to everyone.

Re: It\'s not fair!!!!!

bexar--sorry to hear about your loss. Hard to explain why a young horse would get so sick but I see that all the time with young dogs and cats. Heck--pediatricians even see this with healthy young children. I believe you made the right decision--no need for your colt to suffer with so little chance of making it.

popgun--what an unfortunate situation. That vet should have been prosecuted and also should have lost his license. We do have unethical people in our profession--and that type of behavior is totally unacceptable.
