Orion_70
I think my next purchase will be a Remington XCR in .338 Winchester Mag, I just got a Remington .280 CDL Wednesday and picked up a .223 VLS a couple months ago. I plan on a Caribou hunt and an Elk hunt in the next couple of years so I'm going for the .338 instead of the .300. I'm not much on the short magnums or the ultra mags though, just personal preference.
AJ
Re: essential rifle calibers About the only ones I will concider buying now (unless its a super great deal), is a 338 Rem Ultra Mag (maybe) and a .375 H&H or a 375 Rem Ultra Mag. I have the .17, .22, .24, .25, .26, .28, .30, and .33 calibers covered very well. I can now take Colrado Bob's advise and use the gun money and go on hunts. popgun
Re: essential rifle calibers I'm not one to stick with only the essentials either. Let's just say that a burglar would have to make several trips if he was going to clean me out. I really think a person could hunt anything in the North American Continent with only a good 30.06, a 22, and a good 12 ga. shotgun. Anything more is just sugar. I like sweets myself. ....popgun
njbowhntr
Re: essential rifle calibers My list is short, but growing every year. .22 Mag - Remington 587 .243 Win - Remington 700 (waiting to be rebuilt) .270 Win - Remington 700 ADL 7mm STW - Remington BDL SS DM .30-30 - Marlin 336C There is also an assortment of shotguns and pistols. My favorite gun is the 7mm STW with the .30-30 coming in second. Basically it depends on how far my shot that day is going to be as to which gun I carry. I usually find myself grabbing my Ruger 7mm mag for most anything though, it's just a workhorse gun.

David_218
Re: essential rifle calibers I think I'll just keep what I own now. If I buy any thing related to shooting it will be a shotgun barrel for my Browning Gold. I already have the Deer Slug barrel.

Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: essential rifle calibers I've really got more than I need now, unless I do decide to take that Africa trip someday. Probably my next purchase will either be a single shot (just because I don't currently have one), or perhaps a big bore like a 375 or 40 something. (this is only for the purpose of answering the original question.) I have a fair collection of different calibers of long guns, handguns, and gages of shotguns, that I have finally managed to convince my wife to be essential. I hope no one tells her different. ....popgun
