Guest ExtremeSoloDubV
Here in West Virginia, we are still in archery season until the week of Thanksgiving. That week starts our rifle season. We own about 360 acres with many food plots, and thick cover, it holds deer great. For about 4-5 years we have been shooting at least 5 does a year and taking only bucks that are at least a 6 pt or better ( i have killed nothing less than an 8 pt). Thats just some background. NOW here is where I need your help. Our property is bordered by a public hunting area. I have a great stand located on 2 connecting fields that have the shape of a T. There is thick cover on all the woods surrounding it and the state property border is the woods that also leads into the field.During the 1st morning I see a lot of deer and have killed one every year. These fields lead into our "sanctuary" where every deer during the 1st morning comes from the state side and runs into the sanctuary. The hunters walking around cause all the deer to come to our side. I know this stand is perfect but..... There is a high point going around a ridge w/ 2 benches on the other side of our property. This will also lead to the sanctuary. You could think of this as the backdoor way, thick cover, bedding areas and then the woods open up really nice along the hillside with the benches. Should I try this spot out the 1st morning and try and get the big boy coming the back way or go to the old reliable stand???? I feel that more mature bucks would come this way instead of running through a wide open field but i have killed nice 8 pts (1 mounter) from this stand. My plan as of now is to hunt the woods in the morn. then head to the field in the evening. Whats your ideas??? Please help and give some feedback!!!! Thanks yall
VTbowman
Re: Which Spot to hunt..... Help me out here Well being a meat hunter I'd go to ole reliable, but I understand your interest in the other spot. I have an area that gets pushed hard behind my property, onto mine, but I hunt the "backdoor" of it too. I fear getting shot at from the boys on the back property.. LOL How many tags do you get? If more then one, then go to the "back door" area and give it a whirl, the other one will be there tommorow if need be.. JMO
kyhunter
Re: Which Spot to hunt..... Help me out here I personally would think that the Deer would feel more comfortable in the opening during the morning hoursand skirting the woodlines. Then after the hunting pressure progresses they would hang to the benches in the thicker cover,so they can pick up a better wind. jmo, kyhunter
