Steven
I just got home from running back and forth to New Orleans running aid to survivors. All-in-all I made 2 runs from a donation center the Red Cross set up in Atlanta to a Red Cross center outside of New Orleans, and I never could've imagined the destruction one city could suffer... until now. The smell is nausiating, the air is all but unbreathable, people are (were) roaming with nowhere to go. Southern Louisiana is as bad as the poorest African nation and who knows how long it will be until they get the streets cleared up enough to even get in to start making a plan on where to go from here. I was scheduled to be on vacation this week, but decided sitting around the house and sleeping till noon could wait, so I spent my week volunteering my truck to the Red Cross and running aid. Even though I really did nothing to help, just drove, it did my heart good to help out how I could. I'm just glad my company agreed to let me use my company fuel card to do this, otherwise, I never would've been able to, 2 round trips cost nearly $1500 in diesel. Whatever anybody can do to help, no matter how small, please do, every little bit helps more than you'll ever know.
ruttinbuc
Re: Talk about devastation Thats a fine thing you done there, Racksie! Couldn't imagine what it would be like to be in that devastation up close. The TV shows images, but never comes close to being there. Thanks for your efforts. wtnhunt
Re: Talk about devastation Great thing you did there Steve. Sending a little money or food is all we can do, just not sure who to give it to that we can trust will get it to the people who need it. buckee
Re: Talk about devastation Way to go Racksie. It's a horrible situation. If everyone would just do what they can, even though it may seem small, it would accomplish much.

Turkeygirl
Re: Talk about devastation I've been watching CNN and it is almost like a movie but it sure is unbelievably real and very very sad. Thanks Racksie for helping them out down there.
Steven
Re: Talk about devastation Thanks for your regards everyone. But, please don't see this as me asking for an atta-boy. I just wanted to give a first-hand account of what is going on from someone you all know. I have never seen anything like it and never thought I would in America. I didn't even get down into New Orleans. Picture any movie you've ever seen about a tragic natural dissaster, nuclear blast or alien attack. Now combine those and you're almost there- it's that bad. Very rarely do I see something that makes my jaw drop and causes a stunned silence, but this did. I don't know if New Orleans will ever recover. Rhino
Re: Talk about devastation Well you get an atta boy anyway Racksie. Thanks. My parents went back to their home in Mandeville, LA which is on the north shore of Lake Pontchatrain across the lake from New Orleans. Thier house is fine but lots of damage to other houses, power lines, etc. in the area. Sounds like they will be without power for 3 to 4 weeks. There aren't any open stores or restaurants in the area. I'm trying to talk them into coming back here or go to my brother's house in Atlanta. No question where my hard headedness came from.
