Idaho_ Elk_ Huntr
What kind of small caliber rifle are you using for elk hunting? I started out with a 300 Win mag. my wife and daughter are wanting to elk hunt and I cant decide on what caliber to get them. Both can shoot my 25-06 but I believe its a bit small for elk. Maybe a 7mm-08, 260? Or should I go with a 30 and install a muzzle break and a mercury tube in the stock? Thanks!!
Strut_Buster
Re: Recommend a elk rifle foe daughter and wife?? I'd try a 270 WSM or 270 win. I'd stay away from the muzzle break. That makes the gun very loud. Possibly makeing your shooters jump. Especialy if they are inexperienced.
Strut10
Re: Recommend a elk rifle foe daughter and wife?? I'd go with a nice, compact .308. The .308 gives you the option to use 180 gr. or 200 gr. bullets which should drive deeper and break more bones than the lighter .264, .277 or .284 slugs. Idaho_ Elk_ Huntr
Re: Recommend a elk rifle foe daughter and wife?? I had thought about the 308 but I was concerned about recoil. I have the 270 wsm and it is out of the picture. Maybe I will drag out my old M70 and let the wife try it. But she cant have it. I will have to get one she can drag through the brush. johnf
Re: Recommend a elk rifle foe daughter and wife?? How long are your shots? I've heard of people using a 30-30 with 170gr bullet if it's less than 100 yards.
Idaho_ Elk_ Huntr
Re: Recommend a elk rifle foe daughter and wife?? I took mine last year at 540 yards. But they wont be shooting that far. Around 200 or less.
Guest bronco_mudder
Re: Recommend a elk rifle foe daughter and wife?? I think the .260 with a 140 grain bullet would work wonderfully. Depending on the bullet design, the .264 diameter bullet has much better sectional density than what you would get from the 7mm-08, or the .308 with heavier projectiles. Thus giving you a good penetrating round that will be easier on the shooter. In my oppinion, at distances of 200 yards or less, the .260 would be fantastic for your wife, and daughter. AJ
Re: Recommend a elk rifle foe daughter and wife?? I too would recommend the .260 Rem. Feed that thing some 140 gr bullets like Bronco Mudder mentioned and it will work just fine for elk to moderate distances. It's ballistic twin the 6.5x55 Sweede has taken many many moose down so yes it will work for an elk.
FSU_Seminole
Re: Recommend a elk rifle foe daughter and wife?? I would also recommend a .260 but if you want a .270 with Remington's managed recoil my do the trick to. It has a small paragraph elaborating on your exact question. http://www.remington.com/ammo/centerfire/managed_recoil.htm What ever you decide good luck. Guest Colorado Bob
Re: Recommend a elk rifle foe daughter and wife?? Idaho----I got my wife a 30/06. When we go to the range I have her shoot mostly a 22 or my 17 HMR. Then several rounds out of her 30/06. She has a PAST heraean shield & a good recoil pad on the 30/06------to help tame the recoil. I let her shoot the 22 to get practice on squeezing the trigger & not to develope a flinch. Seems to work she has taken a cow elk a couple season ago & made a 260 yard shot on a bighorn ram--3/4 curl. You said ELK----IMO a 30/06 is just ticket. Or you may think about a 308. I like big bullets (180 grains) for the wapiti. Also it's a good move to take the wife & daughter hunting. My wife has turned into my favorite hunting buddy. Guest cowpoke
Re: Recommend a elk rifle foe daughter and wife?? You could get a 7mm WSM, 270 WSM or 270, or 308 and put a limbsaver recoil pad on it and it should take a good bit of the wallop out of it. Also as mentioned a semi-auot should also tame the beast. I would think you don't want to back of too much the knock down power to help with getting a clean kill.
bowhunt101
Re: Recommend a elk rifle foe daughter and wife?? I would try a 30-06 or 300 with a GOOD recoil pad being those guns kick so much. Get a limbsaver recoil pad on it and it oughta not be so bad.-tim
JimT
Re: Recommend a elk rifle foe daughter and wife?? I would go with a .308 Winchester..Plenty for an elk without alot of kick. I like Remington and Savage rifles,,any of them would do fine.
