joebobhunter4
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? how many deer can you take young buck? because here in north dakota we can only take 1 deer with our bow tag which is why i wait for a nicer buck but i get like 4 or 5 extra deer tags which is all doe tags so anythin without spots id take to for does
Illinoisbowhunter
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? We are able to take up to two bucks per all seasons combined. I try to take bucks that are at least 3yrs +. I will take does out of the herd as well, to help even out the ratio.
Guest Finn
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? I'm not a trophy hunter, but want an 8 pointer that's a little wider than it's ears.

HarvDog
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? I've only taken one deer with a bow and it was a doe. Depending on where I hunt, I've either look to take at least a 6-8 shooter.
Guest antlers21
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? bucks I dont take smaller than a very nice 4x4 or larger and I always try to harvest a doe or two.
too_pointer
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? If I'm after a doe with my bow, I stay at a large yearling or larger. I'm all for taking does out, just want something that has some meat on it LOL too_
Mach1
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? Good size does and if it's a buck, it's got to have at least 140" of bone on its head or it's got to be an older guy. We've got a huge half-rack deer that would score at least 150 if he had a full rack and I'd like to get a crack at him this year because he's gave us the slip the last couple years when he's been in range. IowaDeerHunter
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? Def. have to be 145 or better. Since I already shot my first buck and it was 130.
buckee
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? [ QUOTE ] Well when i first started i would shoot them and wipe the milk off their lips...lol [/ QUOTE ] LMBO Yep, I've been there done that too ...LOL When it comes to shooting bucks, I go for matur deer now. Anything that is 3-1/2 or older suits me just fine. There are a lot of genetic 2x2's around here, so I like to see them mature, before I take em out. I don't want to be shooting a small 2x2 that isn't quite showing his potential yet, and could very well have been a 4x4 or 5x5 in a couple of years. need2hunt
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? [ QUOTE ] how can you tell the age of bucks? by there horns or what? if so how can you tell by there horns? [/ QUOTE ] You can do a google search on "aging deer on hoof" and get some good info concerning telling a deers age. There's alot more to it than the size of the antlers. As for what deer will I take - early season I'm looking to fill the freezer so I'm after does. Once the meat issue is taken care of I'm looking for a good buck or two. I've passed up approx 50 bucks each year the last few seasons hoping to get a buck 140+ and really looking for something in the 170+ range (might sound unrealistic to some but I see some deer in that range every year). I draw my line at the last day of the first IL gun season, if I haven't got the buck I'm after by then I'll look to take out whatever I feel I want to at the time of truth. This year I'm going to be limited on hunting time and my pattern for the season will probably be different... basically more concerned about the meat in the freezer than anything else this year. Straight Shooter
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? Poke'em Young-That's the club to be in! LOL It really depends ont he area I'm hunting. If I know there are great deer in the area, I'll hold out. If it's not a mass producing area, it's getting an arrow through it, regardless of size or gender.
The_Kat
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? Joe, I can legally tag 6 deer a year. 4 in archery season. I am more choosy with a rifle in hand. I like a mature buck with antlers wider than the ears, or better. But when I have my bow I am not a bit picky. I only have one under my belt. Two if you count my lucky kill 3 years ago.
Swamphunter
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? This will work... J/k I usually will wait for a doe to fill my antlerless, although buttons are legal also. I still prefer a nice doe with this tag.
tedicast
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? I'll pretty much take any deer during archery. No sptted fawns, and I won't shoot a doe with spotted fawns.
Tominator
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? Female deer--everything's on the table, including fawns if I'm with Tom over at his buddy's. Bucks--for me, I try to be right around Pope. I've shot at one buck in the last 4 years. My buddy Tom will fill you in with the details.
Guest buddy ahart
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? If its a buck bigger then 4X4 i'd shoot it and if its early in the season i wont shoot a doe unless its alone or i think its fawn is old enough to live without its mother and if a doe spots me and wont stop snorting then she'd get the carbon lol
Guest lobsterman
Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow? lol id shoot anything with my bow, with or without spots, besides their good eating, i think anything with a bow is a trophy...
