Female deer--everything's on the table, including fawns if I'm with Tom over at his buddy's.

You mean somebody that missed (how many times? Was it 3?) would shoot at a target that small!!!! grin.gif Sorry Chris..couldn't resist. wink.gif

Does...the 1st one that's 1 1/2 or older will get wacked but given a choice I'll wait on the bigger ones. More meat for the freezer. wink.gif After the 1st doe is in the cooler I'll go for a bigger one for my 2nd doe and 3rd doe, etc. if I choose to try to kill more than 3 does. We get 5 does if 2 are taken with a bow in Mississippi.

Bucks...It depends where I'm hunting. Here at home it's mature bucks with 8 points or better. In Iowa or Kansas (didn't draw a tag this year) I'll hold out for 150 or better class mature bucks. I'm headed to Missouri for a 5 day bowhunt this year and my plan is to let everything under a 140 class mature buck walk. Eating out of state tags doesn't taste that bad if you put the right fixins on it. grin.gif

Well with a gun I wait on bucks only and no does unless it is late in the season and I have not killed a deer yet. As far as a bow goes Im not going to be picky. I know it takes alot more time and effort to get close to a buck with a bow and even a doe so brown is down with a bow.-tim

In the area i hunt a buck has to be 3 1/2 yrs or older due to the number of bucks in my county and the petential they have to be record class. Does have to be mature

Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow?

I usually take a doe on my buddies place unless bucks are highly active there. I won't take anything I wouldn't put on the wall in the other places we hunt. My buddy scouts year round since he is retired and I let him pick where to hunt most of the time. Nothing like wisdom as your guide. I take does with or without fawns since almost all does have fawns with them whether you see them or not. I let basket rack bucks and smaller walk all the time.

Yes, that's correct, even a target as small as a fawn will be missed by me. I'm an equal opportunity lousy shot, I won't discriminate just because it has spots.

And, yes, it was 3 misses last year, thanks for bringing that up again pal.

any doe with out fawns.

The first week I will only shoot a good 8 point or bigger. Second week, a small 8 or big six. the last two weeks, I will shoot a small six or bigger. I will only shoot a spike or four point if I do not have the freezer filled!!!!

Basically, I start out big and degress as the season goes on!!!

I told a buddy of mine that I didn't like to shoot a doe with fawns and he said something I had never thought about. Almost every doe gets bred right? Then wouldn't that mean that almost every doe you see has fawns? I wouldn't worry about whether she has fawns or not because deer have that herd mentality that if a mama doe gets killed then another doe or does takes over for her. Not to mention that these meek little fawns also survive harsh winter conditions we humans don't even like to be in, much less sleep and play in. I've shot does with their fawns right there as have most hunters. It's a part of life. Take a doe when you can when you need to. JMO

I here ya. I have heard stories of the fawns coming back to find mama while she is being gutted. I don't want to have that happen to me. I would feel too bad.

First hunt of the year I dont care if it has milk on its lips...unless I can see nubs. it has been a long time since I have had the taste of fresh tenderloins.

Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow?

For the first two years that i hunted, pretty much any deer i saw except for a fawn was fair game to me, but for the last couple of years i have passed on quite a few does. even with my bow i was passing them. I think my new philosophy for bow hunting is gonna be if its brown its down b/c my buck to doe ratio is way outta wack.

For the record, I have not said anything about the 3 misses in about a month. Lord knows I am not the ace archer in the woods............ grin.gif

Where I hunt, we shoot any female deer we can, and only mature bucks. During gun season, the occasional button buck will be taken, but not so much anymore during archery.

Don't know how I missed this thread for so long........ wink.gif

Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow?

I try to only shoot at a doe that's going to yeild a lot of jerky steaks etc... But after last year, I'm not shooting at a doe with any fawns, horrible experience with that one.

As for bucks, I'm with Tominator and this one, try to stay close to a Pope, and that explains why I haven't kill a buck since my first one so many years ago. grin.gif

Re: whats smallest deer youd take with bow?

I've never killed a deer with bow, but I've killed some good ones with shotgun and muzzleloader, I don't have any problem holding out for nicer deer. I'll only take a large doe, for bucks it depends, there's a piebald at one spot I hunt that's only 1.5 since they are supposed to be bad for the herd so I'd take him, but that's probably the only exception. I'd say the buck would have to make book for bow here in Michigan (100)
