Re: calling with the can

Yep, I use it, in fact I usually keep a spare in my vehicle in case I forget it at home.

I use it throughout the season. I usually only call when I can see a deer and how it reacts but when the rut comes in I'll do some blind calling.

Early season I use it to call in does (fill the freezer) prerut and rut I use it more on the bucks. I've killed far more deer with it than I've ever spooked. It's a very unaggressive call so it doesn't spook many deer.

Re: calling with the can

The Can is a great call, when used at the right time it can be very effective. I usually dont start using it till the very end of October. First few weeks of November around here is when its highly effective.

I will drump it over 2-3 times every 15 min during the rut, with a slight pause in between. I will also use it to try to bring in bucks that are out of bow range and have had success doing so.

how many times do you do it when you see a deer? and if he doesnt start coming how long should i wait to do it again or how many times in a row should i do it and how many seconds before each time i call with it?

No scenario is the same... this might sound over simplified but when I see a deer I usually start off with just turning the call over once and see how it reacts. I've had deer run in with just that before. If they don't react to that then I'll give them 2-3 turns - basiclly I want them to give me some sort of response that tells me they've heard me. If they start coming in then I don't call anymore, let them try to find the deer that they heard, if they get disinterested and start to fade off then I'll give them another call or two to see if I can get them curious enough to keep coming in.

Ditto. That's about how I use it.

I think early in the season the momma does react to it as if it were a fawn in distress. I remember calling one doe in 3 times. Sure was funny to see her come running looking around for a fawn. I passed on the shot because I had taken a deer the night before and didn't want to butcher 2 nights in a row. grin.gif

Re: calling with the can

the can is a great call but like all calling the better the buck to doe ratio you have the better it works

i use it in late pre-rut, rut, and early post rut had have great luck with it during these times as far as calling in bucks but during the great week of season

(THE RUT) works the best but we have about a 5 to 10 buck doe ratio so i'm a little spolid grin.gif

Works great as many have said. On windy days it doesn't carry very far, but you can get more volume by blowing through the single hole side with your mouth. You can also vary the duration of the call that way. It's worked well for me with both bucks and does.
