smallmunster
Re: Did you know Bush is.... It was Kanye West. Kanye West Rips Bush During NBC Concert article Sep 3, 6:08 AM (ET) By FRAZIER MOORE (AP) Kanye West performs on ABC's "Good Morning America" concert series at New York's Lincoln Center on ... NEW YORK (AP) - It began, fittingly enough, with jazz from New Orleans natives Harry Connick Jr. and Wynton Marsalis. But "A Concert for Hurricane Relief," a heartfelt and dignified benefit aired on NBC and other networks Friday night, took an unexpected turn thanks to the outspoken rapper Kanye West. Appearing two-thirds through the program, he claimed "George Bush doesn't care about black people" and said America is set up "to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible." The show, simulcast from New York on NBC, MSNBC, CNBC and Pax, was aired live to the East Coast, enabling the Grammy-winning rapper's outburst to go out uncensored. There was a several-second tape delay, but the person in charge "was instructed to listen for a curse word, and didn't realize (West) had gone off-script," said NBC spokeswoman Rebecca Marks. West's comment about the president was cut from NBC's West Coast airing, which showed three hours later on tape. The host was NBC News' Matt Lauer, who invited viewers to contribute to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund by phone or on the Web. Some 18 presenters performed musical numbers or gave information on the tragedy's huge scope. Louisiana native Tim McGraw teared up as he told Lauer, "I know the citizens that weren't affected by this directly are gonna stand up and do good things for people." He sang two songs, then became the first of the evening's stars to sign a Gibson Les Paul Special guitar to be auditioned online. Faith Hill, a Mississippi native, sang "There Will Come a Time," with the inspiring lyrics, "The darkness will be gone, the weak shall be strong. Hold on to your faith." New Orleans son Aaron Neville performed Randy Newman's soulful "Louisiana 1927" with the memorable chorus, "they're trying to wash us away, they're trying to wash us away." New York governor George Pataki presented the Red Cross with a check for $2.5 million and promised, "This great state will do far more." "In terms of property damage," said actress Hilary Swank, "the estimate is at least $26 billion in insured losses and perhaps twice that in uninsured losses over a 90,000-square-mile area - approximately the size of Kansas." Other speakers included Lindsay Lohan, Eric LaSalle, Glenn Close, Richard Gere, John Goodman and Leonardo DiCaprio. Comedian Mike Myers was paired with West for a 90-second segment that began with Myers speaking of Katrina's devastation. Then, to Myers' evident surprise, West began a rant by saying, "I hate the way they portray us in the media. If you see a black family, it says they're looting. See a white family, it says they're looking for food." While allowing that "the Red Cross is doing everything they can," West - who delivered an emotional outburst at the American Music Awards after he was snubbed for an award - declared that government authorities are intentionally dragging their feet on aid to the Gulf Coast. Without getting specific, he added, "They've given them permission to go down and shoot us." After he stated, "George Bush doesn't care about black people," the camera cut away to comedian Chris Tucker. Concluding the hour a few minutes later, Lauer noted that "emotions in this country right now are running very high. Sometimes that emotion is translated into inspiration, sometimes into criticism. We've heard some of that tonight. But it's still part of the American way of life." Then the entire ensemble performed "When the Saints Go Marching In." In a statement, NBC said, "Kanye West departed from the scripted comments that were prepared for him, and his opinions in no way represent the views of the networks. "It would be most unfortunate," the statement continued, "if the efforts of the artists who participated tonight and the generosity of millions of Americans who are helping those in need are overshadowed by one person's opinion." Friday's program was the first of several TV benefits planned through next weekend. NBC and the five other major commercial broadcast networks, along with PBS, plan to unite next Friday for a special. The same night, BET will air a benefit. And on Saturday, Sept. 10, the MTV networks will air a special.
wtnhunt
Re: Did you know Bush is.... Saw part of what was said on the news, and also saw NBC put up a message saying that West was upset and that his views did not reflect those of NBC. Pretty sad that instead of trying to bring positive attention to relief efforts that people are so quick to point fingers and make reckless thoughtless remarks. markyj987
Re: Did you know Bush is.... Oh yeah, Bush is such a racist. So is everyone at Fox News too (just ask Michael Moore). After all, FoxNews had Geraldo and numerous other reporters on a crowded overpass with mostly blacks on it and were asking for help now. How racist of them... When are people going to get it? C'mon...it's a freakin' hurricane! Oh wait--that's Bush'f fault too since he hasn't signed Kyoto (just like Bush 41 and Clinton). I haven't followed the story about Kayne West but am really wondering--where are the black leaders in this country? Why aren't they calling this guy out? Or would they rather sit back and let some hip hop artist speak on behalf of them?
horst
Re: Did you know Bush is.... [ QUOTE ] where are the black leaders in this country? [/ QUOTE ] Ive seen several of them being interviewed and the message they had was the same as Kayne Wests.Theyre either saying its a race isue or its a class issue, with the blacks supposedly being lower class than the whites. I seen one, not sure who he was but apparently hes well known, that was justifying the looting and gunfire. He thought that should all be overlooked. When asked if he could distinguish between stealing food and water and stealing big screen tvs he had the nerve to rationalize it saying the tvs were being traded for food and water I personally didnt see anyone in the mood for trading down there. Jesse Jackson was on spouting off about racism and how he had to take it upon himself to save the people But Last night they had another Rapper on, i dont know his name but he was originally from New Orleans. He had a very clear message about the media and people like Kayne using this as a publicity stunt or to get higher ratings. He never once claimed it was racism and sounded rather upset by all the blame being passed around instead of the focus being on the real issues right now.If theyre gonna rely on a rapper to speak on behalf of the black community this one would be a good choice IMO
muggs
Re: Did you know Bush is.... I find it really ironic that no one, I mean no one blames the people themselves. I realize anyone who owned a car, or had the financial means to get out before Katrina hit land was long gone before that happened, and all that were left were poor people who didn't have access to a vechicle and had to rely on the public transportation to get out of the city. But what I'm failing to connect to this, is how in the world any of this is Bush's fault?? If proper plans were not established wouldn't that be the govenor's fault? Not to mention, if these people actually chose to work instead of living off gov't handouts all their lives, they would have had cars of their own and would have been able to drive themselves out of there. It's one thing to lack the necessary means to be an independent and productive person, and then rely on the government for housing and food your whole life, but when you need to rely on the government for common sense and survival skills, I think there's more at fault than just President Bush. He's totally inept and should be recalled for a vote of no confidence. He had no plan, no supplies, and plenty of forewarning going back years, but it's everybody else's fault. Gator
Re: Did you know Bush is.... It's people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton that get this kind of crap started. If they would just shut up and be a part of the solution instead of part of the problem, maybe things would run a whole lot smoother. I agree on the issue of the mayor of N Orleans. I wonder if the only reason he got elected was because of his color.

buckee
Re: Did you know Bush is.... IMO, everytime I see black or white folks playing the race card when there is no justification for it, it's just an example of how racism has done a flip-flop and is now on the other foot. But no-one dares to call a black man a racist for playing the racism card. Let's face it, this is racism from the black perspective against whites. I'm not saying this to spur on racism, because I hate it, but let's at least see it for what it is. It's a two-way street.
muggs
Re: Did you know Bush is.... Horst, you're misunderstanding me bud, I'm not lumping any group of people together, there's good and bad in all things, including welfare. There are hardworking people who need welfar to survive, like you did...while working the whole time. That's the difference. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule, and you are one of them. And good people have to rely on gov't assistance to survive. The difference is between the people who use the system and those who exploit it. I'm not saying everyone on welfare is slacking, I'm saying the people who haven't worked a day in their lives and wait for the monthly check, while sitting in there free apartment, are the problem. Believe me, I deal with this first hand at my job everyday. I work for a federal agency that specialize in public, subsidised, and general housing. In fact giving out vouchers for 400 displaced persons from New Orleans. I also see people who come in looking for free or reduced housing who are talking on an expensive cell phone, have expensive clothing and jewerly on and get out of an decked out car. My first question to them, is how can you afford all that, but not have money to put a roof over your head. Believe me, I don't make anywhere near $20 an hour, and I'm living with my girlfriend's parents so we can afford to get ahead in life and buy a house. But I work 40 hours a week, and go to school nights for 18 credit hours, which I pay for in loans that I'll have to pay back into my 40's. Believe me, I'm struggling to keep my truck gassed up, to keep my bills current, and my girlfriend fed. There's no silverspoon in this mouth, but I don't complain about it, and I don't always expect someone else to handle my problems. Don't get me wrong, this rant isn't about welfare or people who have had to rely on welfare. It's about people who treat welfare as a way of life, a means of survival. That's it, no offense was meant to you bud.

Reloader
Re: Did you know Bush is.... Rappers base their careers on trumping up the racism card. Their "music" is all about the false concept that ALL blacks are opressed and steped on and discriminated against. Question though, these same rappers that complain about the oppression are the ones making millions...they prove they are lying by their very existance. as to the welfare issue...Bukee nailed it down tight. horst
Re: Did you know Bush is.... Muggs, PM sent to you.Everyone else, that post wasnt meant as an attack on Muggs and Im sorry it came across that way.It was meant as an observation and I got carried away, my fault entirely. Ive just seen to many people lumpng everyone in one class together like that.Doesnt matter if its whites, blacks, welfare recipients, or whatever. When it happens we make people like Kayne right, its a form of racism and its a pretty common one. But the facts are theres thousands of businuesses gone, tens of thousands of jobs, and countless people are homeless because of ths storm. And Im already hearing, not so much in here but I am hearing it, people begining to complain about the drain these people are putting on this country, like it was thier fault.Im afraid after the shock and charity start to wear off its gonna become more common, and I hate to see that in here.Again, I apologize to anyone who took my post wrong and escpecially to Muggs, it just came across wrong
