Sorry Randy....had to do it Randy Oitker, age 15, is an avid bowhunter and outdoor sports writer. Randy is also a professional archer who hails from Plainville, IL. He competes in the 3-D archery circuits and is a two time NABH World Champion and a three time NABH Shooter of the Year. He holds 17 national titles. randyoitker1
Re: Camoaclad grand opening Thanks Buckee, I am 18 years old now and I was very fortunate to be made an ambassador for Cabela's this year. Even though I do all of my shows with Mathews, they have me come to help promote archery to everyone by letting anyone come up and shoot a Genesis bow. I love our industry and want to help keep it in our future. Thanks again for the compliments. Shoot straight, Randy

randyoitker1
Re: Camoaclad grand opening Buckee, For target shooting , I use a Stanislawski 2-finger DoubleEagle release with a wrist strap and for hunting I use a Copper John Eagle Series release. If you to www.copperjohn.com, you can see both of them. Thanks for asking, Randy

randyoitker1
Re: Camoaclad grand opening I want to say that my best advice for any archer is ALWAYS BE ETHICAL! I am attcahing an article that I wrote last year for www.youngbucksoutdoors.com. I write for several magazines including realtree.com, National Bowhunter and many more. The most fun I had this year was performing at Bristol Motor Speedway and making a commercial with Richard Childress. You can read the story on realtree,if you type my name at the top under search. It is called BowBird for Randy.. I hope that this article might help a new archer. Thanks, Randy " As I travel around the country doing outdoor shows and archery demonstrations, one of the questions that I am asked the most is how do you get started in archery? The most important thing that I can suggest for you to do is go to an archery shop. Then you need to find a bow that fits you properly. You need to be measured for your proper draw length and weight. You do not want to get a bow that is more poundage than you can handle or one that is too long for you. Proper fit is very important! When I started archery, I wanted to pull a lot of poundage. My doctor even warned me not to pull too much poundage when you are young. I now have tendonitis off and on in my wrist from damage that I did when I was younger. Pulling too much poundage will also cause bad archery habits. It can cause you to want to pull the trigger of the release prematurely because you are not able to hold the poundage comfortably. This is called punching. A lot of bow companies have youth bows that will grow with you. Some of them are adjustable in draw weight and draw length. Because as you shoot more you will build up muscles where you can hold more weight comfortably. As you grow your draw length will get longer. After you have picked out a bow that you like and fits you properly, you will need an arrowrest for your bow. Some bows come as a package that includes an arrowrest and a sight. But, if the one that you pick isn't equipped with these then you need to get some kind of arrowrest. Arrowrests come as simple as a plunger or as elaborate as a drop away. Sights also come as simple as a pin sight and they go all the way up to a magnifying scope. Some people prefer not to use a sight and shoot instinctivly. It is a matter of what you like and what you are comfotable with. Another important item are your arrows. You need to make sure that they are the proper length, weight and spine. Most arrow companies have a chart that tells you what arrow is suited for your draw length, draw weight and bow type or ask your local archery pro shop for help.Don't go to a local discount store and grab a couple of arrows and think that they are going to fit your bow right. After you have completed those steps, you need to figure out if you are going to shoot with your fingers or a release aid. There are hundreds of release aids to chose from and trust me, I have tried most of them. There are a lot of good ones out there. It is just a matter of what do you like the best. The best thing that I can suggest is to start out with simple things. The more elaborate sophisticated equipment should come later. Most pro shops have an indoor range. At an archery shop, there is usually someone there to help instruct you. Even if you already have a bow, most archery shops are willing to help you . Sometimes even the people who are just there shooting will help. Most archers are good about helping other new and young archers.Just don't ask them where do they hunt their big bucks! When you first start out shooting you will need to get some kind of an archery shooting bag or just get an old pillowcase and stuff it full of rags, old worn out clothes or old jeans(work great) as full as you can get. Tie it together at the top with some string or duck tape it shut. You need to put a good size dot (3 inch to 4 inch diameter) on it with magic marker or paint. An important thing to check before you decide on getting a bag. Make sure that you are allowed to shoot a bow in your neighborhood. Most cities do not allow this. But,if you live in a rural community, you need to check first, but usually you can. After you have found out that it is okay to shoot in your backyard, you need to place it up against a hill or somewhere that if you miss or the arrow goes through the target it is not going to hit someone or something. Remember the new bows are faster and better than they used to be and they are a weapon. They are a lot of fun if handled properly but they can be dangerous if they are not. You should always have an adult with you when you are shooting your bow. You want to get up close to your target when you first start shooting your bow. Five or ten steps away from the target is good to start out with. Build your confidence up close because you can always move back. If you want your arrow to move one way or another you need to move your sight accordingly. If your arrow hits high move your sight pin up. If your arrow hits low move your sight pin down. If your arrow hits right move your sight pin right. If your arrow hit left move your sight pin left. The rule in archery is you always follow your arrow. Remember this, the best equipment out there can't make the shot for you. Practice is what makes you a better shot. I will never forget the first archery league that I was on. I had almost $400 in my bow and equipment. One of the boys that I was shooting with could out shoot me with a bow that he bought at a yard sale for $7.00 . So good equipment is great but PRACTICE is everything." Good Shooting!
