hutchies
I got one. Rarely does it come out of the case. It is mainly just a range gun but I plan on taking it out hog hunting this year.
Guest ronin
Re: The venerable .30-30 That was my son's first deer rifle. He move up to '06 and I don't think he's used his 30/30 since. I liked it quite a bit.
BLH
Re: The venerable .30-30 I have a marlin .30-.30 that was my first deer rifle and 12 years later it still comes out of the case to deer hunt on occasion. I also use it a lot when bear hunting behind dogs.
G-Daddy
Re: The venerable .30-30 I have my dad's Savage Model 340 that I use sometimes. Last time it was out was in January for a Sika hunt at Chincoteague NWR.
superguide
Re: The venerable .30-30 There's been more game killed up here with 30-30's and .303 British than anything-my boss really opened up a hunter's eyes when he dropped a bull moose at 200 yards with his old model 94 on the way to his stand. I don't have a 30-30 but I'd sure like one-I do have a .303 though.
TexasDeerHunter
Re: The venerable .30-30 I have a Winchester Mod. 94 in .30-30. I will say that it is one of the best deer rounds ever. Out to 150 yards or so, even here in Texas most of my shots are within 100 yards. Truth be told , it's probably the only rifle I need. I just never use it, primarily shoot a .223. njbowhntr
Re: The venerable .30-30 I have a Marlin 336C. You can find it over the shoulder every year in West Virgina and every other year in Maine. But it splits duty with my 7mm, just depends on what stand I am using that day. AJ
Re: The venerable .30-30 While the old cartridge has been around for quite a while and has dropped more critters than I will ever see, I have no use for it. IMO, there are much better cartridges to choose than the 30-30 Win. One of my beefs with it is the gun, I do not like lever guns (other than the 99). So its a double whammy for me. No thanks. Shaun_300
Re: The venerable .30-30 I do not own a .30-30, but I have a .303 Savage, which is very similar to a .30-30. I take out once and a while, but I like to take my .300 Short Mag out a lot more.
LifeNRA
Re: The venerable .30-30 I still own one and will never get rid of it! My father bought this for me when I was 13 for Christmas. Even thought I never killed a deer with it, it has sentimental value for me! My father has killed more deer with his 30-30 than I know of, even a few muleys when he was in the service! But I will use it as a back up rifle if something were to happen to my 270. Lever action rifles I heard were never that acturate but at a 100 yards I cant complain about this! Then my father hits the inner diamond with his 30-30 with three rounds! Stinger-Hunter
Re: The venerable .30-30 I have a Winchester .30-30 model 94 - I used to not like it, but have grown to appreciate it. You have to learn the limitations of the gun. I don't shoot anything past 100 yards with it now. If I know I may have a longer shot I take my .30-06. I used to think that it wasn't powerful enough, but with experience have learned and witnessed deer running regardless of which gun I use. The .30-30 is a good gun, but should only be used within 100 yards. It's not called a brush gun because the rounds don't deflect off of branches better. It is called a brush gun because you use it when you know you are going to have shorter shots - like when you are in some brush, heavy trees, etc.
Jeramie
Re: The venerable .30-30 I have an old saddle ring. That puppy is old too! I love the old gun but I wont draw down on game with it. A few years back I hit a doe with a 30-30 at roughly 75 yards. I was also using a Hollow point round. She went down only to get back up, run and crash into a fence, flip over the fence, bleed for hundreds of yards, and then quit bleeding. To this day she is the only deer I know I killed and never found. Its not that the 30-30 is still an active round its just that ive never, never lost one to my 30-06. One round puts em down. Also, I would never shoot a 30-30 over 100 yards. You all can dispute that all you want but they lack way to much for me to put lead out past 100. superguide
Re: The venerable .30-30 Geez lots of empty bellies in our neck of the woods if it wasn't for the old thutty thutty-seen some moose fold their tent at 200 yards with one shot from them. It's the man behind the trigger lol.
Missed160
Re: The venerable .30-30 Killed my first deer with a Model 94.. Now my father gave me his 336. I have shot it a few times this year, now I can't wait to take it hunting.. Just something appeals to me about shooting a deer with that classic round. I don't mind the lever action, as I think the rifles are very accurate out to 150 yards. What I really don't like about them is the hammer safety, not very safe.. TexasDeerHunter
Re: The venerable .30-30 FYI for those of you who like the .30-30 but not a lever gun. Remington produced one in a 788 bolt action years ago, and Savage made them in a pump action. You can also find a few single shots out there. Guest bronco_mudder
Re: The venerable .30-30 Savage also made the dirty thirty in bolt. I've got one that I take with me when I'm bouncing around on the 4 wheeler. Its my don't worry about what happens to it rifle. Not a cartridge that I use for regular hunting purposes, but I have taken 2 deer with it.

David_218
Re: The venerable .30-30 Several years ago, I had a Remington Model 788 in .30-30 which I used for deer hunting in Kentucky. Always had good luck and accuracy was excellent with 170 grain Winchester silvertip's.
