Mexican Troops Enter U.S. For Hurricane Relief

Mexican Army Hits U.S. Soil For First Time Since 1846

LAREDO, Texas -- A Mexican army convoy began crossing into the United States on Thursday to bring aid to victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Carrying water treatment plants, mobile kitchens and supplies to feed victims of Hurricane Katrina, the convoy bound for San Antonio is the first Mexican military unit to operate on U.S. soil since 1846.

Mexican Army soldiers ride on a transport vehicle into the U.S. to bring humanitarian relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Forty-five vehicles carrying about 200 people will apparently be used to provide water, meals and other help for people evacuated from the New Orleans area. The first green trucks, with Mexican flags attached to the sides, crossed the international bridge at Laredo at about 8:15 a.m.

The convoy includes two mobile kitchens that can feed 7,000 people a day, three flatbed trucks carrying mobile water treatment plants and 15 trailers of bottled water, blankets and applesauce. It also includes military engineers, doctors and nurses.

The mayor of New Orleans has said thousands may have died from the powerful Aug. 29 hurricane. Hundreds of thousands have been displaced.

The government was already planning another 12-vehicle aid convoy for this week. It has sent a Mexican navy ship heading toward the Mississippi coast with rescue vehicles and helicopters.

Mexico has sent disaster relief aid missions to other Latin American nations, but not to the United States.

In 1846, Mexican troops briefly advanced just north of the Rio Grande in Texas, which had then recently joined the United States. Mexico, however, did not then recognize the Rio Grande as the U.S. border.

The two countries quickly became mired in the Mexican-American War, which led to the loss of half of Mexico's territory in 1848.

Re: Mexican Army Invades U.S.

This is another subject that should probably be moved to the policical room, however....

My following comment is not addressed to anyone in particular:

I know some of you are joking, but....I guess I just don't understand.

In the political room, many were commenting about how little help we get from other countries.

Now we are getting some help, and so many of you have the audacity to accuse ulterior motives on the part of the countries that are willing to help.

Is it too much to just say "Thank You", and accept what is offered?

Would you be saying the same thing if the help were coming from our brothers in the North?

What do some of you really want?

Re: Mexican Army Invades U.S.

Remember Jim Bowie's famous words.............

He looked over the top of the wall at the Alamo and seen 2000 Mexican troops charging...............

He then turned.......... looked at the 175 Texans that were behind him.............and said...........

.........." How come nobody told me that they were going to pour concrete today"..................

just a litlle construction humor

Hey Popgun, You ever been to Mexico? We went in at Matamores and I will never in my life enter there again. People were banging on our windows trying to get money. People living in Cardboard houses. The houses in the town had barb wire around them with 8 foot fences. Kids were running up and down the streets begging for change. You wonder why they are trying to make it to the US? Because here they can have a 5.15 an hour job and live like kings compared to how they live there. Every gas station you pull in is full service. You throw them a dime for filling your tank, washing windows, checking oil, and tire pressure and they look at you like you just made their week. For those of you that can't understand why Mexicans want out just make a trip to Mexico for a few days. Canadians unlike Mexicans do not have the same reasons to cross the border. They live do not live in a poverty stricken country.

Re: Mexican Army Invades U.S.

hutchies, I will admit I have never had any reason to go to Mexico, so I have never been there to visit.

However I lived in the Philippines for almost four years while in the Navy, and they were worse off than Mexico, and still are.

I still have close ties there.

I will ask you a question....

You quoted my reply but said absolutely nothing that relates to the quote.

This is an official Mexican Army force that has been sent here to "help us".

What does quoting my reply have to do with your reply?

These are not just a bunch of Mexicans that are claiming to pass our borders, (with a hidden agenda); they are a military force, whose purpose is to help us.

Popgun, lighten up! Sometimes in the worst of times humor is needed in order to regain some sanity! I am quite sure nobody ment anything on purpose. Do you always try to find the worst in eveything? But I wonder if they can send that much help, why dont they help more of there own people?

I've been there lot's of times. Sure, there's a bunch of thugs and bums right on the border, but once you get 15 or 20 miles in country that changes dramatically. Also, the further south you go, the more the features change. In central Mexico, you have a lot of blue eyed, blond haired Mexicans. Not as much Yacci (sp?) Indian blood.

Oh well, I'm glad they're here to help and I'm sure we won't have any trouble getting them to go home when it's over.

BTW - I can't believe we don't have any Latino's in this forum??? Half of the South Texas deer hunters are Latino.
