Missed160
Who here has gone on "Special Hunts"? I By that I mean the hunts that are held in parks to reduce local deer populations? Were they worth while? I have visions of sitting in a stand & having people stumble by & ruin the hunt. There is a hunt being offered at a park near my home. This is the first time this park has been open for hunting in quite awhile. The hunt is bow only & is the opening weekend for Minnesota gun season. Hopefully the timing of the hunt & the fact that is is bow only will keep the clowns out. Just looking for opinions, are these type hunts worth while? Should I bother & get my hopes up? Any input would be appreciated.
popgun
Re: Special Hunts If I were in your shoes I would keep my hopes up and try it out. You never know.... While you are quietly slipping through the woods to your stand, you may stumble by & ruin someone else's hunt. ....popgun
AaronS
Re: Special Hunts I haven't hunted any park hunts myself, but around here whenever they hold a hunt in a state park, the anti's show up and hold a rally in the parking lot. The hunt still takes place as planned, but just more hassle to deal with.
Guest deadeye270
Re: Special Hunts It depends on how well the hunt is organized. One of the parks down here had numbered "observation towers" and each hunter was dropped off at their specific stand.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Special Hunts In Texas, when there's a hunt going on, the park is usually closed to non-hunters, unless it is really big, like 10's of thousands of acres. Check it out with your local game folks.

willfish03
Re: Special Hunts have hunted some special hunts. one was a good experance where they let 45 archers hunt over three weeks 15 per week. in about 4500 acres. another was not pleasant at all, unorganized elmer fudd type archers all over, stalking around. wont ever apply for that park agian . Its a shame because it has a good deer population.
spineshot
Re: Special Hunts we have about 10 special areas that hold drawings to hunt in ohio. NASA has a fenced in area and to be drawn is like hitting the lottery. Lots of big deer, but not as easy as you would think. the people running the hunt ive heard let off fireworks and make lots of noise to keep the deer moving for the hunters. i have never got drawn for any of the hunts until this year and i was drawn for an early muzzleloader hunt oct24-29 in southern ohio and also a gun hunt at a preserve on nov 29. No time for the muzzleloader hunt, but me and two others might try the gun hunt
wtnhunt
Re: Special Hunts Never have, but am thinking I am going to try to get someone to get me in to hunt the arsenal this year. They opened it back up last year, after 3 years of no hunting due to 9/11. There are some really old deer on that land.
