3006 or 300WSM?

I've decided to replace my old Ruger M77 with something more accurate. I believe I'm going to buy a Tikka T3. The question which I'm stuck on is whether to stick with the 3006 which I have killed many elk with over the years or go to the higher powered 300WSM . I'm too busy to handload anymore for the time being. I like the availability and price of the 3006. I'm definately staying with a 30 caliber bullet.

What do you think? Stay or switch?

Re: 3006 or 300WSM?

I can not say anything bad about the -06 but it is not a round that I care for, for me this is a no brainer. The next gun I get for myself is going to be a Tikka T3 .300 WSM. I love my Win. M-70 in the WSM but that T3 has me looking hard.

The only thing that got me with what you asked is that you are not going to reload for it, that would have me looking at the -06, just for the amount and price of the ammo and every Mom and Pop store has it.

If you like the -06 then stay with it, the more you get from the WSM is good (look at it as a .300 Win. Mag.) but you will also get more recoil from it.

btw- I did not get the light gun and the recoil is not bad at all but I don't think I would like it in a light gun.

Frank.

Re: 3006 or 300WSM?

It's up to you. One really won't do a better job than the other. I can give you facts where one is better than the other. Look at it realistically, if the .30-06 won't kill it the 300 Mag won't either. You will get slightly flatter trajectory from the mag. Out to 400 yards they both have enough energy to cleanly take elk, when using standard ammo. The Mag will give you about 4" less drop at 400 yards when both are zeroed at 200 yards. The mag will have more recoil and the ammo will cost more. If you felt the need for more power, you can always get the Hornady Light Mag ammo and come close enough to the Mag's performance, actually, it equals many factory loads for the magnum.

Re: 3006 or 300WSM?

I would take the '06. I recently sold both my .300 ultra mag and my .300 rem short ultra mag. Both were excellent calibers and I have nothing bad to say about them. The .300 ultra mag has by far the best ballistics around, but it comes with recoil. I ended up replacing them with a Rem CDL in .30-06 because of less recoil and cheaper , more readily available ammo.

Re: 3006 or 300WSM?

Like the others said, it all depends what you want. If you don't want to spend too much on shells, and want a little less recoil, i'd go with the .30-06. If you want the extra gun, and don't mind paying a little more for ammo, take the .300 WSM.

Both my brother, my dad, and myself own Browning BLR's. Dad's is a .308 Win, my brother's is a .270 Win, and I have the .300 WSM. I can honestly not tell the difference in recoil between the my brother's and mine. I also have a Remington 700 BDL .300 Win Mag, and my short mag in the BLR kicks A LOT less than the Remington 700 .300 Win Mag, which is quite a bit heavier than the BLR. So what I'm saying is that there would not be too much difference in recoil between the .30-06 and the .300 WSM.
