Success with 777 and precision rifle bullets

Just a follow up from last year. I shoot the basic knight wolverine 50 caliber rifle. Up until last year I had used 90 grains pyrodex rs and a 300 grain hornady xtp bullet. I had shot 2-3 deer and not recovered any of them. They would run forever and ever. I would find blood for 20-30 feet then nothing. I had to change something or give up muzzleloading. On advice of this forum, I tried the precision rifle dead center bullets (.40 caliber bullet in a .50 caliber sabot, 220 grain). I also used 100 grains of 777 powder. The results were amazing. I shot a buck and he dropped in his tracks. He was probably 20 yds. away. I couldn't find the bullet and some said maybe it broke apart due to the close range. But, I finally processed this deer this last weekend and found the bullet. INCREDIBLE! The 40 caliber bullet has a diameter of about 3/8 of an inch. When I shot the deer it went through just beneath the backstrap, through the deer and lodged in the shoulder. It had mushroomed to 13/16 of an inch. Almost double what it had been prior to being shot. I'll attach a picture for those of you looking for a better muzzleloading bullet. Thanks again for all of you that gave me advice last year. I was afraid I was going to have to give up muzzleloading but now its my favorite season of the year. I look forward to the last year of October here in Oklahoma. If anyone is looking for a good muzzleloading bullet try these. Look on the web at prbullet.com and see what they have to offer. Cabelas carries them or you can order them direct. Their phone # is on the website. Good luck and get ready for muzzleloading. Take care and good hunting, Greg [/url] http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b256/gt2003/Precisionrifle.jpg

Last year was the first time I used the Precision brand of bullets, I went with a 275 grain bullet from their QT line. I shot my buck at 90 yards and he piled after a short 25 or 30 yard run. I had much the same result as you when I recoverd the bullet, flattened right out, making a nice big wound channel. These are deffinately bullets I'll continue to use.

Edit: BTW, I was using 3 of the 50 grain 777 pellets in a TC Omega. grin.gif

Re: Success with 777 and precision rifle bullets

I tried the 220 grain dead center bullet on the advice of PR. However, previously I'd shot a 300 grain XTP bullet with incredible accuracy with 90 grains of pyrodex RS. I'm thinking of decreasing my 777 powder to 80 grain and see what kind of accuracy I get with the 220 grain bullet. Distance isn't too much of an object. 95% of the areas I hunt will have shots of 50 yds or less, more likely 20-30 yds. What are everyones thoughts? I could always switch to a 300 grain PR and start with 80 grains of 777 but thought I'd try what I had 1st. Let me know. Thanks, Greg
