coles
i shot my first bull elk with my bow a year ago today. so this morning my friend(same one that called last years in), and my brother went up to the same place just the other side of the mountain. the bull i got and the one that was with him came from this area so we opted for that. we got there about 6:30. right at daylight. we walked quite a ways and went through this little saddle int he hills. down below us was a little creek and looked perfect. so we bugled and cow called from the top of the hill trying to locate something. well we heard someting down in the creek but didnt go down there for fear of it being a bear. there is lots of grizzly bears in this area. so we walked down this little road/ trail and up to a little cliff to bugle again. well i was sitting on the cliff by my self and my bro and friend were behind me. they heard something in the trees so they set up. i didnt know they were doing this or heard anything so i stayed on the rocks. then i saw him. i looked over to my right and standing right there on the trail that we had been on not 10 mins before was a huge bull. well i ran over and told them and ran off to get set up. there was the one creek and another little one that ran together and i should have known he would come down that but i didnt go down there. sure enough he came down the creek and had another elk with him. i never saw him down in the creek but i could hear him pawing the ground and walking around. but aj who was up on the cliffs could see him perfect but never saw if the other one was a bull or not. but they finally left since we couldnt do anything. and we moved on to try and get to them again. never saw them again but we called in another bull but just caught a glimpse of him through the trees about 50 yards. so all in all it was a good day. i guess we are pretty lucky for 2/ 18 yr olds and a 16 yr old goin up at spur of the moment. and let me tell ya. we will be back after em next weekend. whitetailtrax
Re: a year ago today! very cool! I called in a young bull to 12 yards yesterday morning but passed on the shot. I'm hoping to score on a big bull, but was very tempted to shoot the youngster - he was extremely vocal and ready to fight it seemed. There's nothing like the sound of an elk bugling in the cold mountain air!!!!
