Snappers and Blue Cocktail anyone?

Around 6:30 PM yesterday, we went to our Town Park which is located on the Hudson River to do some fishing for snappers. When we got there, the tide already came in and the fish were starting to bite as it got cooler. But right around dark they were biting like nuts! I caught a snapper ( baby bluefish ) and my brothers caught cocktail blues ( mature bluefish ). We were using frozen spearing for bait. Saltwater fishing sure is a different ballgame. The fish that were barely 2 pounds faught like they were huge... lol... My brother in the following pic also caught another big cocktail blue, but it bit my dad's finger when he went to pull the hook out of its mouth and it tore through the hook.

Re: Snappers and Blue Cocktail anyone?

Hey I'm Joes Dad.

Cocktail Blues are 1 pound to 2 pound bluefish.

They can get up to 30 -40 pounds. They also put up an incredible fight. When they feed the striped bass just swim under them and eat the fish that falls from the frenzy. They are extreme predators and when they feed, its like a shark frenzy.

They are a VERY oily fish and not too good to eat unless they are prepared special. I grew up fishing mostly salt water, but its been a while and I got lazy and forgot that these fish have big sharp teeth and are VERY aggressive. The last few years we have been doing alot of fresh water fishing and those fish don't have teeth that are too big or dangerous. I went to pull the hook out of its mouth and it took a big bite of my finger...YOWEEE!! shocked.gif I chucked him back into the water hook and all.

This wound I suffered is extremely dangerous to me...It is my trigger finger!

My bow, my gun...even pick my nose with it.

I can't have that finger out of action mad.gif

I need to be more careful around little fish tongue.gif
