Anyone know of a blind person that Deer hunts?

I’m not sure how well this will go over or if posted in the correct forums.

Anyhow I have a 5 year old boy that was born blind. Greatest kid in the world and super smart! I’m sure it will be another 2-3 years before I start taking him hunting with me. I’m trying to think of a way I could let him shoot the gun himself and try and take aim and talk him were to point the gun. Maybe modify a scope were I can see through it and him hold the gun? I’m sure everyone remembers there first kill and how exciting it is! I would also like him to enjoy the same thing. He’s getting old enough when I now go hunting now asking many questions and wanting to go. Daddy did you get a big one!! smile.gif I guess the main thing would be just being in the woods hunting with him. But if I can’t find away for him to shoot I’m wondering during youth season If I would be allowed to shoot the deer for him? Then act like cool Shane we got one!? I’m sure as he gets older it wouldn’t be as enjoyable however for him. I live in Kentucky but don’t see anything in our guide for visually impaired people only disabled.

Thanks!

check out MB11 or 12 can't remember which one, but they had took a disabled (blind) kid out hunting and filmed it for MB. his scope mount was custom made and was offset to the side so dad (or who ever) could coach the kid where to point the gun and when to fire.

I thought it was the best hunt I have seen! what joy the child had when he got his hands on the deer to feel how big the antlers were.

I'm sure if you fired off an e-mail to the guys over there at realtree they can fill you in with all the details. hope this helps.

MB11 or 12? mdqc01 that sounds like a cool video I would love to see it!

If anyone has a e-mail or a contact person please post or e-mail me at [email protected]

Again thanks for the great replys. Im really excited to see this has been done before or might find away for him to use a gun of course when he gets a little older.

Just curious I was thinking of taking him in the woods at age 7 then actually hunting at age 8 using a gun if he can. If of course I still have a place to hunt at that time.

Re: Anyone know of a blind person that Deer hunts?

YES! There was an article about it in this month's Texas Trophy Hunter mag. (sorry, no online article) The guy had a rifle with a homemade offset scope mount. A "seeing eye hunter" looked through the scope, but never touched the gun, and would give directions like up, down, left right, squeeze. The blind guy had killed a buck, a doe and a hog on this particular hunt. Takes lots of practice and a steady hand from the shooter, but it can be done.

I encourage you to give it your best shot. It might mean more to that youngster than you could ever imagine.

TurkeyHunter, I owe you a major apology. The first thing I thought when I read the title is that this guy must be a total moron. How in the heck could a blind person hunt? I am so sorry for you and your son. I hope everything works out so that you can take him out to hunt. It can change a kids life forever.......

You might also check with Norm Sauceman. He runs the DHNA(Disabled Hunters of North America). He might be able to help you out.

There was a show on ESPN 2 that was about disabled hunters and the one guy was blind. He used to bowhunt before he was blind and he still does wit the help of a spotter. The guy draws his bow and releases the arrow, but the spotter lines up the pins and tells him when to release the arrow. The guy was a prety good shot hitting the bullseye at 30 yards consistently. He took a nice antelope on the hunt.

Dont know anyone personally. Remember reading the story about John Rook.

Dont know that that would be legal. I have taken a quadraplegic guy hunting during our archery season here and he had his crossbow rigged where he pulled a string while the person with him(me) held and aimed his crossbow. Of course this was during a time it was also legal for me to hunt, so technically I could have tagged a deer he killed in myself if I had to.

I would also say it is not too early to start getting him out now. Will be taking my youngest daughter(4) out with me some this year when the conditions are favorable.

Re: Anyone know of a blind person that Deer hunts?

First I would like to thank everyone for the over whelming response’s and encouragement!

Texan_Til_I_Die,

I couldn’t even begin to image how hard it would be to tell someone how to move there gun left, right ect then fire. Like you said I’m sure it will take a lot of practice. I found it very funny last night at dinner he started asking me questions when can he start going hunting after posting here. Right now he’s VERY scared of loud noises which I’m sure is normal for a blind person. So I told him we would start with a 22 rifle short shells something not so loud to see how he likes target shooting.
