Sick of abandoned dogs

It seems like every year we get about 2-3 dogs that are dropped off on our road. We've lived here for almost 8 years. We are the last house on the road and there's about 15-20 acres between our property and the next crossroad. And about 80 acres directly across from us. So there's a good stretch of uninhabited roadway past our house that is a hot bed for dropping off unwanted dogs.

I am at my wit's end. I am tired of calling the pound because they always look at you like you're lying.

Yeah, right.....I have a jillion dogs here that I just wanna unload on the humane society. WHATEVER!!

My father said to just shoot them. Well, I can't do that. There was a female puppy dropped off last week. There is now a huge white bulldog trying to take up residence in our yard.

WHY ME??????????????????????????

Any suggestions???????? 16_2_19.gif Take 'em for ANOTHER ride?????? crazy.gifconfused.gif

Re: Sick of abandoned dogs

The only problem with taking them to a pet adoption place is that it's 35 miles away. I don't live in the city limits so I can't take them to our local pound either.

And what makes it even worse....my kids want to keep everything that comes in the yard!!!! crazy.gif

Re: Sick of abandoned dogs

That's a real bummer Andrea.

We're getting that problem more and more here too, and I think it's because of the expense and all the red-tape the city pound or humane society puts you through to adopt or get rid of a pet.

My wife and I just lost our old friend (dog) who was over 18 years old, so we've been thinking about getting another one.

They want $350 from us to adopt a dog and sign all these papers that basically say we have no legal ownership of the dog. The line that got me was the one that says "If you adopt a dog from us, you can never sell, give away, adopt out, or return this pet." crazy.gif

So that means, I am buying a mixed breed mutt, for $350 and I will never really have any legal ownership of it. crazy.gif

And you wonder why people abandon their pets. crazy.gif

I think I'd have to buy one from an individual out of the classifieds or something. I hate pet stores and adoption places. Those people are weird. You are always looked at suspisciously.

Hey.....I have a new litter of chihuahua pups buckee!!! Want one?? wink.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Re: Sick of abandoned dogs

I know the feeling. I live in the country and get 15-20 dogs a year. No animal control Pound will not take them I even offered to pay. I called the state police to ask what they do and he said "Take it out back and tie it up and you have a new pet or take it out back and shoot it." I shot them as a last, last resort. What put me over was one dong was staying under my truck at night and decided to chew up my wiring on my truck and he also tried to get in my truck bed and scratched it to death. I wish they would catch these people.

Re: Sick of abandoned dogs

Its a sad situation. Have you tried calling the sheriff's department to see if there is anything that they can do?

My grandparents seem to be the drop off center in their area. They end up getting tons of dogs that break loose, runaway and become wild because they aren't being fed and watered. The humane society and DNR take care of them here.

Re: Sick of abandoned dogs

No answers here, sorry for your situation. I had an idiot brother in law that pulled the same stunt, drove his dog out into the Arizona desert and dropped it off. I could have rung his neck... Funny thing is, the idiot forgot to take the tags off of the dog, so his vet finds the dog a few hours later, gives him a call at home, and walla! Here's your dog back!

Re: Sick of abandoned dogs

Well, last night I had made up my mind to just load up the dog and drive him out to be somebody else's burden. But as I sat there in the backyard swing.....that big old white bulldog with the huge black eyes came lumbering over and sat at my feet and looked up at me like...."Well?"

I couldn't do it. mad.gif Me and my big heart. mad.gif

He's got to be at least 10 yrs. old. He walks very slowly. I think I am going to just put an ad in the paper and list him as found. confused.gifconfused.gifconfused.gif

He's an American bulldog. Doesn't bark. Doesn't do anything but lay in the shade. I think he thought my house would be his final resting place. Great.........

Re: Sick of abandoned dogs

Bob Barker was right when he said spay and neuter your pets. grin.gif

Seriously, it is a terrible situation when people are irresponsible with their pets. I am the current owner of one abandoned dog. My black lab Loki was abandoned as a puppy. She hung around the school I work at b/c there were people here. I took her home and to the vet and we nursed her back to health. She was about 10 weeks old and hardly had any hair on her face. I'm not sure I could just shoot an abandoned dog, lucky for us we have a humane society that will gladly take any. Too bad the majority of them end up going down for the eternal sleep. frown.gif

So how many dogs do you have now? grin.gif

It looks like a flippin zoo at my house. I am about to go crazy. I have 6 chihuahua pups ready to be sold. They go in the paper this week. Then I have the mom & pop chihuahuas. Then I have my bloodhound/basset hound mix Buford out in the yard and the new huntin pup Dixie.

Good grief. If I can sell all the pups and get rid of the bulldog, I'll have 4 dogs. That's plenty. Still too many, but I can deal with 4. crazy.gifsmirk.gif

Sounds like you need to start collect other types of animals as well to complete the zoo...maybe a giraffe or something. grin.gif

Har har har..........well, we have a snake, a couple of mice and a few goldfish. Sorry, no giraffe. He wouldn't fit in an aquarium. grin.gif
