New rifle confusion...

I have posted in here several times that I plan on buying a Ruger 204 as soon as I can save up the money...but now I am begining to wonder. I told my dad what I was planning and he looked at me like i had lost my head. He said it may be a hot little gun but it isn't any better than a 22-250. I have been doing some research online and am discovering that he may be right. Though the 204 has the edge on muzel velocity and flat trajectory in factory loads, the 22-250 can actualy equal the proformance of the 204 and even exceed it comparing handload data from Aliant and IMR. My dads final argument was that the hornady Vmax flat base bullets for the 204 cost about 16 cents each while you can buy Nosler balistic tip boat tail bullets for the 22-250 for about 10 cents each.

This is starting to make sense to meconfused.gifso I may change up and buy a 22-250. Hopefully I will have the money about Christmas time..but depends on what else hits the fan between now and then...

Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Re: New rifle confusion...

It depends on the distances you plan to be shooting. If most shots are going to be under 400 yards, a 223 Rem will do what you need. It can be used very effectively on varmints to 500 yards with a good shooter. Its a lot cheaper to feed also.

If you plan on shooting 300-500+ yards regularly, the 22-250 comes into play. To really benefit from its performance, get a faster twist and shoot some heavy (60+ gr) bullets. It will handle the wind a lot better and can make turning prarie poodles into red mist a lot of fun.

The .20 caliber was another answer to the question nobody asked. It fills a niche between the .172 and .22 calibers. It does not do anything better than the .17 or .22 does though.

Well heck, if it's pure performance you're after, just get a 220 Swift, a 224 TTH or a 223 WSSM and be done with it!

.223 WSSM Looks realy nice but Savage doesn't chamber their varmint rifles in it. Couldn't find any data on the 224 TTH, and the 220 Swift is not quite as hot as the 22-250. So for now Im gonna stick to dreaming about a new 22-250 LOL

WHAT?!? I think you had better check your data again. Check your reloading books. The Swift is anywhere from 50-150 fps faster than the .22-250. The .22-250 Ackley Improved is equal to the Swift.

And, the Swift has a reputation for being extremely accurate. I am not putting down the .22-250 as it is a very sweet varmint round. It's close to the Swift, but not quite equal.

Re: New rifle confusion...

I have a ballistic twin sister to the .240, a Tactical 20,

as well as a 22-250. Even though they both have their

niche, given the choice of just one, I'd be inclined to

go for the 22-250. Prior to moving to Iowa, I have taken

everything from sparrows to deer with the 22-250. Many

will claim it is no deer rifle, but it is legal in Nebraska, and

I never had a problem with it using lung shots.

My error! I did an overly fast comparison of the two. I just looked at the lightest bullet listed for each chambering and didn't notice I was comparing different bullet weights. I was looking at a 40gr round in the 22-250 and at a 50gr round in the 220 swift, and only comparing muzel velocity.

I want the Savage 12FV, and unfortunately that restricts my choices to 223 Rem, 22-250 Rem, 243 Win, 308 Win, 204 Ruger. Of those I believe the 22-250 will be the best preformer.

Now to save, save, save...
