VermontHunter
This afternoon I went over to VTBowmans to resight the .30-.06 for the new rounds I will be shooting....(Remington Premium AccuTips 168grn.), usually I do this later in the year and the weather is colder and a heavy jacket is required but he and I are going to be hunting some bears in a very short while so I wanted to get this done now,,,The very first round pounded my skinny shoulder like a baseball bat ( OUCH ) after 4 rounds and decent groups that was enough for me,,,,my shoulder was finished,,,NOW ACHING LIKE NO TOMARROW AND BLACK AND BLUE !!! either I get myself a new rifle with less recoil or a recoild pad....this skinny 170lb. body just can't take the pounding anymore.... atleast not without the heavy padded jacket..... Simms Recoil Pad WHERE ARE YOU AT ??.. Thanks for letting me vent a little.....
NY911Bowhunter
Re: That\'s It I\'ve Had It !!!! My Switchback has NO recoil - just as effective for bears - look into one!
RangerClay
Re: That\'s It I\'ve Had It !!!! LOL! You remind me of my pal last month. He was sighting in his new .338 A-bolt before he went to Alaska. Shoot three shots, massage the shoulder, shoot three shots, massage the shoulder, shoot three shots, massage the shoulder, shoot three shots, massage the shoulder. You guys and your big guns are funny Ranger
tedicast
Re: That\'s It I\'ve Had It !!!! Hey Luke...I'll send up my Encore and some 12 gauge Lightfield Hybrid slugs...wanna sight that in for me too????
VermontHunter
Re: That\'s It I\'ve Had It !!!! Big Gun,,for heavens sake Ranger it's only a .30-.06,,,but it's a carbine pump,,,and man this thing is like shooting a 7mm Mag...... And as for the Bow for Bear,,,,,I know for sure my Alpine will do the job but Shawn has never taken a bear,,,,so if one happens along he and his 300 MAG has fist crack,,,,the object of this hunt is to try and get him his first ever bear...... ,,,,and I don't think he quite has the nerve with his long bow yet...to take a crack at a large black bear in close quarters..... Shaun_300
Re: That\'s It I\'ve Had It !!!! I always shoot either my .300 Win Mag or my .300 WSM, doesn't bother me a bit! I sure like my big guns! You gotta get yourself a recoil pad Luke, or maybe a gun with a little less umph, a .308 Win is close to the .30-06, but comes with a lot less recoil! slughunter
Re: That\'s It I\'ve Had It !!!! i have a sims recoil pad on my 7mm, if i didnt this 125 pound body of mine would be done. the other day i was shooting trap with my grandpa. we had no target loades so we used 12 gauge magnum turkey loads. bad move. Chrud
Re: That\'s It I\'ve Had It !!!! Recoil pads are nice, but I'll give you the answer to feeling ZERO recoil for sighting in any gun, rifle, shotgun, it don't matter. When shooting, put a sandbag between the buttstock and your shoulder. You'll feel a small push when you shoot and nothing else. It is the only way I sight in my .30-06 and shotguns with turkey loads. But, keep your cheek down on the stock. The recoil "up" seems to increase a bit since it can't go back. If you have your cheek on the stock, it won't be any different that shooting normally. But, if you have your cheek off the stock, even a little bit, you'll be hurting.
TurkeyHunter
Re: That\'s It I\'ve Had It !!!! I have a Browning 30-06 A bolt which I dont think it kicks bad at all. Now When I bought my new Mossberg 835 12GA and started shooting 3" and 3.5 MAG shells now that HURTS like a son of a B%#$%!

Just be sure your eye position is the same in relation to the scope or you'll end up with a slightly skewed point of impact. Lately, I've been using one of those gel wrist pads for a computer. Works like a champ!
Rhino
Re: That\'s It I\'ve Had It !!!! LMBO at you Luke. Reminds me of my Browning BAR 300 Win. Mag that stays in my gun cabinet. That sucker will kill at both ends too. I sure love my Remington Model 7 .308 that's loaded with sort of a lighter load and tipped with 150 gr. Barnes X bullets. AAAAAAAH the beauty and pleasure of reloading your own.
Guest chrispy
Re: That\'s It I\'ve Had It !!!! i have a 30-06 carbine pump too and it sure does pack a pretty good punch. i just suck it up and take it like a man, i am also shooting 150 grain. anyway, have you tried remingtons managed recoil rounds? wonder if that would be any help to you? VTbowman
Re: That\'s It I\'ve Had It !!!! [/ QUOTE ] 2 things about this statement. 1. Its a .300 ULTRA MAG which is way more then you regular 300 mags.. LOL And 2. It aint that I dont have the nerve, more or less no confidence that we will get any closer then 200 yards of a bear... I mean come on Luke, your quiding this hunt. LOL But no worries, that 300UM will definately cover that and more. The long bow is a 20 yard and under weapon this year. Heck it was made for moose hunting and has 2 complete moose pass threws, by its maker/owner for himself. I am quite sure he did not under achieve in its power. Beside I also pack a .357 mag when I am bear hunting... LOL (Not that I ever when before.) LOL
VTbowman
Re: That\'s It I\'ve Had It !!!! P.S. Quit whinning. Your only shooting a 165g 30.06 for crying out loud. Shoot my 180g 300 UM and then I will understand your whimpering. LOL Disclaimer: Shooting the 300UM does not bother me what so ever.

LOL [/ QUOTE ] Lawdi Da,,,,300 is 300 to me,,and Im sure the animal isn't going to notice the darn difference when it's dead..... This still has nothing ta do with my now nice, black & blue shoulder.. ,,,,Man I didn't realize the walp this little .30-.06 had until yesterday shooting it without the heavy jacket on....and antisapating the recoil didn't help with the pulling it to the right either... Boy I must be loosing some of my gusto in my old age,,things like this never use to bother me,,,but boy those 4 rounds sure did hurt.... Shawn you could have told me about the down filled vest earlier.....

browning_gold_12
Re: That\'s It I\'ve Had It !!!! vermonthunter, i shoot a browning abolt 300win mag with a boss. the boss is a ballistic optimizer, meaning you can tune the gun to any load, but it is also a muzzle brake. it has comparable recoil to my old carbine pump 243. my wife shoots it, and given an opportunity, i would let my 7 year old shoot it too. the only problem, is it is LOUD!!!! VermontHunter
Re: That\'s It I\'ve Had It !!!! I think in the spring,,I'm going to invest in a NEW .270 BDL,,,,with the Simms recoil pad of course... I'm partial to bolt actions anyhow,,,,the only reason I have this carbine pump is the wife snuck out and bought it for me as a gift and I never had the heart to tell her I didn't really care for PUMPS in rifle form....and she will never hear it from me either...
