Re: WHAT IS FAIR CHASE, SEPERATING MEN FROM BOYS...

Plus...I don't see anything wrong with the post. Everyone posting their thoughts and opinions just like the orginal. We are all entitled to our opinions...as long as it stays civil. So far, I don't see anything really wrong with this post.

As far as the anti's...I think it show how strong we support each other, reguardless of how a few think...most of us agree.

Re: WHAT IS FAIR CHASE, SEPERATING MEN FROM BOYS..

Since this type of stuff tends to rile me up, think I'll add a couple of points:

On high fences - size does matter. Large acreages under high fence make it no easier to find and take a particular mature buck. What a high fence will do is produce more mature bucks per acre than you would typically see on low fenced areas. BTW - I've never hunted a high fence ranch, but I would if I had the opportunity.

Long shots with firearms - Ask AJ if there's any skill involved in making a clean kill at 350 yards with a 25 MPH crosswind.

Feeders - Great way to take does and cull bucks, but don't look for the biggest bucks there. You won't find them. Oh, and someone needs to explain the difference to me (from an ethics perspective) between a feeder and a food plot. Both are unnatural sources of food designed to attract deer to a certain area.

Let's see, have I left anything out? Oh yeah, scent lock clothing, climbing stands, compound bows, release aids, bow sights, deer calls and scents, and of course trail cams should all be avoided since they give the hunter an unfair advantage and don't show proper respect for the game. ... shocked.gifgrin.gif

I use alot of the stuff you mentioned above. I'm a big believer in food plots but I think food plots differ from timed feeders.

Reason being is because when I plant something the food is always there and readily available. A deer could show up at one of my plots right now while I'm sitting here typing this message from work. He could be in my plot now I'm not there. I could go hunting this afternoon & no deer could show up.

With a timed feeder deer are conditioned to show up there at a "specific" time every day. I just watched a DVD a couple of weeks ago where a feeder went off & at the sound of it going off not 5 minutes later a couple of does & nice bucks showed up. 1 of the bucks was taken with a bow.

Now if that's legal where you hunt & it probably is here in SC to, then that's fine but I wouldn't hunt like that.

People that I do know that hunt with feeders do it with gravity feeders where the food is always available & deer aren't conditioned to show up at a specific time.

I also have gravity feeders on my land but they are only used for winter nutrition when the season is over.

Wow Texan, did you get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. grin.giftongue.gif You seem a little edgy.

This could get into a big nasty debate, I am just going to add that is long as it is legal then go for it anyway you can. Personally not saying bad or good I have no desire to hunt in a fence, over timd bait for deer or with dogs. Just my personal preference.

On the long shots, what sort of skill is that? Most hunters can shoot a rifle 250 yards.

Practice makes perfect doesn't it.

A 35 or 40 yrd shot by a bowhunter, would be equal to a 250 yrd and beyond shot with a rifle.

Re: WHAT IS FAIR CHASE, SEPERATING MEN FROM BOYS...

I started with a shotgun then year latter started bow hunting then couple years latter bought a muzzleloader.

I personally dont like hunting around deer feeders its just the way Iv alwasys hunted and seems a little cheating to me. and I study the deer whather I want to shot it or not its not like HEY A DEER SHOOT IT. I know how to call a deer. YEs I know how to track and their are good stories to the deer on the wall. Yes but not always but give me time im both a harvester and hunter

Didn't intend for it to sound like I'm PO'd. I just get tired of hearing folks condem something that they have no personal knowledge of. The high fence is a perfect example. Some assume that a high fence around a ranch means the deer can't hide or escape. Bat pukey! Give a buck 8 or 10 square miles of thick cover to hide in and then try finding him. And I understand B&C's not recognizing deer taken from high fenced areas. That all goes back to making sure that no one is "shooting deer in a pen." Where would they draw the line? Deer from high fenced areas that over 4000 acres are allowed, but those from 3950 acres aren't? There's just no good way for them to do it except to say that nothing from a high fenced ranch is allowed and I don't have have any problems with that whatsoever.

Re: WHAT IS FAIR CHASE, SEPERATING MEN FROM BOYS..

always wondered why people got so hung up on being called son or boy...

anyway, i've hunted with a muzzle loader, a high powered rifle, and yes, even a bow - they all have their ups and downs, and there are different strategies for each - my preference will probably always be the high powered rifle... you can call me a boy if you want, i've been called worse. heh, my dad still calls me "baby-boy", everybody gets a kick out of it since i'm about half again as big as he is smile.gif

Re: WHAT IS FAIR CHASE, SEPERATING MEN FROM BOYS...

This post has shown that we all have alot of passion when it comes to deer hunting and that is great. We will never all agree on everything, but we still support one another as hunters. I think that we all have made valid points no matter what we agree with or don't agree with. Good luck this season hunters no matter how you choose to hunt, just keep it legal.

BTW -

Oh, and someone needs to explain the difference to me (from an ethics perspective) between a feeder and a food plot. The only difference I see is that a feeder can be set to feed at a certain time every day and a food plot is available at all times.

This is true of some types of feeders, but what about all of the protein feeders we use that are free choice? A deer can eat as much as they want anytime they want.

[/ QUOTE ]

You got me on that one. Im not up on feeders, it is illegal to hunt over them here so I don't look at them much. I was just guessing on that one.

but i hate to listen to some of the red necks in my area how they have no regard for the law or property laws. and then they tell you how big their buck is. just today i talked to a guy that claims to have a 270 class buck he shot 2 yrs ago in the middle of the night from the road. i can think of a lot of different instances.

[/ QUOTE ]

See...now your talking about poaching...not hunting! I think we all can agree breaking the law to kill a trophy animals isn't right. These folks aren't hunters...they are poachers.

snapwalleye...what you need to understand, not everyone has the same type of hunting grounds. Deer aren't the same everywhere. There are alot of factors that go into killing a deer in an area where someone hunts.

Bottom line...as long as its within your states laws...you are a hunter in my eyes...whether it be a man, boy, woman, girl...whatever.

Snapwalleye,

Go look at my post "Buttkickin' Country" and tell me if you fit in the catogory of man or mouse. grin.gif I hunt 100% public land here in the Land of the Great White North. I am a little on the Hard-Core side of things, but it don't make me anymore of a hunter than anyone else. Just means I might be a little CRAZIER is all. tongue.gif
