WABS
Just picked up a used Remington Model 742 in 30.06 in really good condition. I took it apart the other night to give it a good cleaning and it amazed me how simple it was to take apart. Thanks Remington! Those of you who own one -- how do you like it? popgun
Re: Remington 742 in 30.06 I have several good deer rifles, but my 742 in .308 gets taken out in the woods more often than any of the others. I like mine. Keep it well lubed and it won't jam. Use the right ammo, and it won't jam. A lot of times the new ones will jam every now and then until the new wears off. You did good in finding one used. 30.06 is probably the most popular caliber. ....popgun
Jeramie
Re: Remington 742 in 30.06 I dont have one either. I do however have the Rem700 in 30-06. They are tack drivers! Congratulations on the purchase. Im sure the 742 will treat you just as well!
Missed160
Re: Remington 742 in 30.06 Don't you guys think they are really heavy?
popgun
Re: Remington 742 in 30.06 I don't really think an average of 7 1/2 lb. is excessive weight, especially with a sling. Sometimes a little more weight helps reduce the "felt recoil". ....popgun
Jeramie
Re: Remington 742 in 30.06 Isnt the 742 a semi-auto? If thats the case then they are all heavier. Sometimes you have to give to get. I like my bolt action but I recently aquired an old Winchester 30-06 in semi. Its SWEET but heavier. I dont mind at all. AJ
Re: Remington 742 in 30.06 [ QUOTE ] Isnt the 742 a semi-auto? If thats the case then they are all heavier. [/ QUOTE ] You aer correct, the semi auto is 2 ounces heavier than the bolt gun. Model 7400 = 30-06 22" barrel wood stocks 7 1/2 pounds Model 700 BDL = 30-06 22" barrel wood stock 7 3/8 pounds You must have some pretty sensitive hands to be able tell the semi was heavier. I am impressed. Actually, where the weight is distributed can make two different guns feel lighter or heaveier even though they are the same weight. too_pointer
Re: Remington 742 in 30.06 I've owned 2 742's and loved them. I now have a 7400 in .270, that I will never get rid of. No jamming problems either too_
WABS
Re: Remington 742 in 30.06 I was able to get to the range this weekend and I was very impressed with how well the 742 shot. I fired a box of shells through it and after some minor adjustments I was right on and the groups were as good as this shooter can do. I like the little additional weight.
