BigBuckVideo
I use a Canon Optura 20 as my cheaper camera. The other one we use is a Canon GL2 but the price range is a lot higher than $500.
smallmunster
Re: What kind of video camera??? I assume you want a digital? I have an older sony digital8 that has performed well for me although most have went to MiniDV or recording directly to dvd's or even harddrives. Many of the cheaper cams lack the manual controls and options that some of the more expensive cams offer. Consumer reports has lots of info and ratings if you want to pay to see it. Camcorderinfo.com and easycamcorders.com also have lots of info that might help you out. I like to go to a large electronics store and handle the cameras in person before buying. Just looking around a bit I would take a look at the Panasonic PV-GS35 , it appears to have the manual controls that you desire and I would love to try out its 30X optical zoom.
