Ohiobucks
If you had an extra vacation day to burn, would you use it during the active pre-rut (or seeking phase) or the peak of the rut? I have such a day, and was wondering weather to use it maybe this Friday or wait for another week or so? I am hunting Central Ohio, so if anyone out there is seeing any rutting activity, please feel free to chime in! When is your favorite time to hunt big whitetails? Thanks! Tominator
Re: Seeking phase vs. peak rut well, you know how i feel Tom. personally i like the pre rut when they're running around looking. seems to me it's difficult to call off bucks when they're tending a doe. unless the doe is within range, you don't get a crack at the buck. when the bucks are out rubbing, scraping, cutting across trails and generally looking for hot does--that's the time i like best. AaronS
Re: Seeking phase vs. peak rut I agree with Tominator. During the actual peak, the does are ready to breed and that is where you will find the bucks. Just prior to the does coming in heat the bucks are already primed and will be easier to call in. Stinger-Hunter
Re: Seeking phase vs. peak rut I've heard that the mature bucks don't participate in the seeking phase as much, usually they are younger bucks. Don't know how true that is, but it's what I've heard.
snapper
Re: Seeking phase vs. peak rut [ QUOTE ] If you had an extra vacation day to burn, would you use it during the active pre-rut (or seeking phase) or the peak of the rut? [/ QUOTE ] I just put in for this Friday...I like the pre-rut opposed to the peak. If a mature buck is with a hot doe (since she'll stay in heat for 24 hours) he won't leave her...like seeing a big gobbler with hens out in the field, you may interest him, chances are he ain't coming!
