Strut_Buster
Re: Help me understand Bush? [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I teach in an inner city school and they honestly compare us to a private school here in the city. They expect us to have 100% of our students reading, writing, and doing math on grade level. That alone is obsurd. [/ QUOTE ] I don't think it's absurd at all. If we don't expect and demand excellence from our students, they will never achieve excellence. On a more personal note. I'm curious about your background. What grades and subjects do you teach? What is your own educational level and in what subject(s) did you major? If you would be willing to share that information with us, it might help us gain a better understanding of your perspective. BTW - I'm a product of the public education system and I consider myself as well versed as those from the private schools. [/ QUOTE ] Your policy kinda contradicts bush's policy. He expects excellence from the teachers. Which from all my teachers no matter how much i hated one or two of them, still taught me something. Weather it be how to be an independnt learner of pounding stuff into me. If we expected excellence from the students we would be punishing them for failing. Which its how the real world works. Bush fails to aknowlege the fact that not all kids learn at the same pace.. like himself... and not all kids will be getting A's in school. So why punish the teachers. The kid has a beautiful thing called a textbook. Some of my teachers in the past and heavily now I must read and learn souly from the book. Instead of punishing public schools which i am an outstanding product of, they should put more money into public schools. The desire to learn rests souly with the student. horst
Re: Help me understand Bush? No child left behind is a joke IMO.If a kid doesnt wanna learn, you cant force him to no matter what you do.I was a good example of that, my teachers all tried thier best, i simply didnt care one way or the other.Long story short in my senior year i made up almost 4 years worth of classes in about 18 weeks in order to graduate.I had some good teachers to, school just never appealed to me. johnf
Re: Help me understand Bush? [ QUOTE ] No Child Left Behind Act (NCBL) is a good first step. [/ QUOTE ] Most of you know how conservative I am and almost never appose Bush on anthing, BUT If you're not a teacher, you don't really have a clue how no child left behind affects the classroom and our jobs. The fact is that there are parts of NCLB that just aren't going to happen no matter how hard we try. For instance the is no "general math" class for high school students via NCLB. All high school students in AR have to have 3 math credits, so they all have to take algebra, Geomatry and algebra II. Some students lack the capacity to do those math and will NEVER be able to. Some people are never going to go to college. We have to have garbage men, chicken pluckers, custodians, and lumberjacks. There is no shame in a job like that if it's done well and with pride. No child left behind is a pointless program that only causes stress on students, teachers and school adminstrators. [ QUOTE ] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I teach in an inner city school and they honestly compare us to a private school here in the city. They expect us to have 100% of our students reading, writing, and doing math on grade level. That alone is obsurd. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't think it's absurd at all. [/ QUOTE ] I'm a product of a very good public school too and am very well read and had a great education. But mostly because I wanted to learn. How do you convince a crackhead who makes more money than you do selling meth that he needs to learn how to figure the area of a circle? When you can tell me how then I will support NCLB. I'll say it again, If you don't teach, you don't understand it. Challange: Go subtitute teach for a week.

SaskMan
Re: Help me understand Bush? [ QUOTE ] They whine about not being paid enough--which is bull. They make more (especially with their benefits) than most with a four-year degree. Their insurance? Very very low, if any deductibles and co-pays. Vacation? Three months a year--plus a week here and there throughout the school year. Job security? They could do anything short of molesting or killing someone and they'll have a job forever at MPS. [/ QUOTE ] I'll try my best to saty out of the BUSH bashing bit but it's funny how so many people who don't know about Education seem to have only bad things to say. What if I said everyone in Customer Support was overpaid and whined too much. I don't know much about the pay scale of teachers in Wisc. but I'll be I make a **** of alot less than most of you people. [ QUOTE ] I'm glad the most important factor was left out: the parents [/ QUOTE ] Unfortunately this is true!! Not enough parents give a rats arse about their kids eductaion, they just gripe about the education system. I don't know enough about NCLB but I know a bit about it and let me say that I'm glad that Sask ED. is using it as model on how not to educate. I'm ready for the bashing now guys...let me have it. I think this country is not viewed quite the same as it was prior to Bush in the previous administration. I think that some had this notion led to be believed due to Clinton that this country was weak and that we would take a hit and just laugh it off. Guess the world has seen that is not the case. Guest lostiniowa
Re: Help me understand Bush? last time I checked I still have all of my guns. No one will ever take our guns and abortion whether you agree with it or not, it will always. It frustrates me that people stick on those 2 points. But that is what makes our nation so great we can agree to disagree and talk about all the things we agree on like hunting good luck to all of those like me waiting for oct 1!
