LifeNRA
People, not animals, come first Tony Hansen The Enquirer It may have been the most despicable, ridiculous act that the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has ever committed. And that's really saying something. I received an email the other day from Scotty Bud Melvin. Scotty Bud is an on-air personality with WRKR radio in Kalamazoo and a devoted tournament fisherman. Thus, thanks to that commonality, we're friends without really knowing each other. Anyway, Melvin had just returned from a weekend trip to Mississippi with some of the biggest names in bass fishing including Kalamazoo resident and Bassmaster Classic champion Kevin Van Dam. They delivered four trailer loads of supplies to the residents of Long Beach Mississippi which lies about an hour east of New Orleans. Melvin called the trip "life-changing." The generosity of a few pro bass anglers didn't surprise me in the least. But it did get me thinking. So I started cruising around on the Internet, hoping to form an impromptu inventory of the hunter/angler organizations that have chipped in during this natural disaster. Along with the Bassmasters, I found such groups as Delta Waterfowl, the National Wild Turkey Federation, Pheasants Forever and more had pledged financial assistance to those in need and all of them displayed prominent links to such human relief groups as the Red Cross. Ducks Unlimited, one of the nation's largest and oldest conservation organizations had a large banner on its website about Hurricane Katrina. Seems DU has set up a messageboard system that allows other DU members to locate friends and family in the stricken areas. Using its vast resources and databases, DU is helping people reconnect with each other. Of course, it's also pledged $15 million to help rebuild the marshes vital to waterfowl. But that was located only after thorough searching on the DU site. Clearly, DU chose to put the human element before the needs of animals. Then, just out of curiosity, I checked on PeTA's website. And guess what I found. Pledges to fight the White House in an effort to include animal rescue requirements into any natural disaster reaction plans for the future. Celebratory statements on the rescue of lost cats and dogs. A self-promoting claim that PeTA members had helped make a change by howling over the fact that FEMA had dared put the rescue of humans over the rescue of pets and other animals. Nowhere did I read or see anything about the assistance PeTA has offered the human victims of the disaster. It was almost as if the PETA people were so consumed by their concern for abandoned rottweilers that as much effort should have been to rescue pigs and goats as was made to rescue human infants. Somewhere in all of this I almost lost track of who the real animals are.

[/ QUOTE ] Gotta disagree with ya on that statement, Tex! A rat is WAY more valuable than a child, in PeTA's eyes! Bob

AJ
Re: People, not animals, come first!!! I guess it depends on the situation. Some instances, I would save the animal over the person. I knof for sure that I would go to some extreme limit to save my pet, but would not do it for a strangers kid. If I saw a person and an animal that were stranded not in imminent danger, I would probably rescue the pet first.

WARNING This video of Penn & Teller uses a few profanities...but it is probably the BEST representation of PeTA I have ever seen. It is also 15 minutes long. I guess I'd have to say that if it came down to a choice between a person or my beloved lab, I'd have a dead lab. Heck, even a stranger or someone I despise like Hillary Clinton would still get "the last place in the life raft" instead of my dog.
