Re: Round nose vs spitzer

i've shot both but i like the spizter type bullet and also like the ballistic and accubond as well. these two bullets will kill anything around in the usa. the round nose bulloets were actually designed to be used in brushy country and will do the trick if your in that kind of area

Re: Round nose vs spitzer

I have shot deer with round nose bullets & Spitzers. From what I have seen , in any given caliber, the roundnose drops the animal faster given equal shot placement. And of course........my favorite 35 Whelen with its 250 grain round nose bullets drop them where they stand. As some on here have witnessed. grin.gif

Purely unscientific, but I am talking about 35+ deer being shot under field conditions. I'l take a good roundnose any day for hunting here in PA.

Re: Round nose vs spitzer

Both work great on animals. The round nose (RN) will expand faster than the spire point or spitzer (SP). The wound channel will be larger as the bullet will mushroom faster. As far as its working better in brush, thats bogus. A round nose will deflect as much as a spire point.

The spitzer is more aerodynamic and will be less afected by the wind for longer range shooting. Comparing a RN vs SP in otherwise equal settings shows the RN drops about twice the amount a SP does. The RN also sheds velocity a lot faster. I compared a 30-06 loaded with 150 gr bullets. One load is using a RN, the second uses a typical SP, the last is loaded with a poly tipped bullet like the Ballistic Tip. All start at 2900 fps sighted in 2" high at 100 yards.

Path

Dist - RN......SP....BT

150 = +1.6" +1.9" +2.0"

200 = -0.5" +0.5" +0.7"

250 = -4.9" -2.5" -2.0"

275 = -8.1" -4.7" -3.9"

300 = -12" -7.3" -6.2"

Energy

Dist.....RN......SP......BT

100 = 1943 2298 2403

200 = 1309 1870 2053

250 = 1061 1681 1893

300 = 854 1508 1743

400 = 556 1204 1472

For most shots on deer the RN will work just fine. You don't see a real benefit of the SP bullets until you get past 250 yards.

Re: Round nose vs spitzer

I have used them both on deer, elk, & black bear. IMO there's not difference in preformance on the animal. All my shots were under 200 yards. Right now-- I'm using 180 grain Hornady spire point out of my 30/06. I'll probably stick with Hornadys, when I get done with batch of reloads----I'm thinking of use Hornady Custom factory ammo in the 180 grain spire point. But I may go back to the ole 180 grain Core-lokt" round nose.

Now what about flat base vs boat tails. I like flat base bullets---boattails I think come apart a little to easy.
