how do you get a kid

How can you get a kid to shoot quicker. My 9 year old takes forever to squeeze off her shots when we practice. Last weekend to shoot 5 shots took nearly 45 minutes. She is not afraid of the gun, but she is trying to be perfect on her placement on the target. Last shot although I did not let her see it, I did get a bit frustrated and told her ok this is a monster buck walking in the woods, shoot now or you dont get a shot. She still hesitated, I then said you have two steps left, one, then boom she shot, and she made a good shot, about an inch right of center on a 50 yard target.

Without showing her I am frustrated, how should I go about trying to speed her up in practice, or should I just let her continue to take her time. I am kind of puzzled at where to go from here and am open to any suggestions.

Why does she have to hurry the shot.... I would much rather be precise then in a hurry she will get the speed down later let her shoot her way for now this is an awesome feature in kid patience you hardly ever see that sounds to she has got the hardest part learned now she has to get the easy part.

I agree with what has been said, just try and get her back out shooting so she becomes more comfortable, and with the comfort will come speed. You wont have to do anything except spend some time on the range with your daughter (never a bad thing)

Let her take her time. She's still young and the speed will come with age. I would rather my boys be placing good shots slowly instead of bad ones quickly. Too much pressure will break her concentration and just frustrate you both.....

I agree. Just go with the flow and congratulate her for her efforts. Time and practice have a way of bringing it all together. In the mean time if you're concerned about a hunting situation, plan most of your hunts on fields or food plots and enjoy your hunts together.

tell her to take a deep breath, let it half way out, aim and shoot. If she follows this procedure she get through her shot at a beter pace. I not saying to rush her shots, but anyone will get a little jerky after they hold one eye closed and try to aim for 10min.

That is part of the problem I see. The longer she takes to shoot, the more inaccurate she seems to be. I am not concerned with time as much as I am with real hunting situations and practicing specifically for them. You realistically just dont have many opportunities where you can take extended periods of time to get a shot off. She wants to keep on practicing and I will continue to let her shoot every weekend and will let her take the time she needs, just hope this year that she will be able to squeeze off a shot when she has an opportunity.

Since she is obviously focusing intently on doing everything just right, why not point out that while its commendable to wait and be sure to make a good shot, its not good to wait too long and become shaky and thus make a bad shot.

Point out the good shots compared to the shaky ones and perhaps that will motivate her to shoot quicker because she obviously wants to do well.

grit your teeth & remember, patients, patients, patients........been there......she will come around on her own. if she is anything like mine, she is trying so hard to do the right thing for you.....she will surprise you when it is crunch time though!!!!!

A shooter that takes their time is a good thing. Speed comes with practice and proficiency. I'd focus on tight groups and let her shoot when she wants. Just one man's opinion.

I understand what you are trying to overcome. You may try some exercises with a pop can on a string. put the string over something downrange so you can raise and lower the can from the shooting area. Cut a hole in a cardboard box or something and lower the can so its visible in the window. Give her an allowable period of time to get the shot off before the can goes away. It should not take over 1 minute to get the shot off. More than that its doing more harm than good.

Just make sure she is enjoying the shooting sessions. Always end the session on a positive note. It makes a big difference.

Re: how do you get a kid

My 10 yr olds the same way.But I gotta tell you, ive seen him rush shots as well and id much rather have him take his time on a live target.

Here what I do for what its worth.Set up where you can see a long ways off.As soon as a deer gets in sight of you have her find it in the scope. And keep it in the crosshairs as it comes towards you.By the time the deer gets into range, she will be calmed down, the crosshairs will already be where they go, and as soon as the deer stops and offers a good shot all she has to do is squeeze the trigger.

Dont put her in a psition where shes gonna have to shoot quickly,I made that mistake with my nephew and it was a disaster. He didnt even aim, just started shooting, it coulda been bad if hed crippled a deer and it was very frustrating for him as well.Theyll learn quick enough, for now just let her shoot however she feels comfortable shooting and have fun;)

Re: how do you get a kid

Thanks everyone.

She will be hunting a food plot in a field. After last year I dont think I have to worry about her taking a shot she is not confident in. She would not shoot last year because she was shaking too bad and could not get steady. Never really had that problem practicing. At 8 years old after we got down and I asked her why she would not ever take any shots, she said to me that she could not take a shot that might not humanely kill the deer. She just could not stand to injure one.

Again I am not looking to pressure her, she wants to shoot and I do tell her every time I am proud of her and that she is doing great. I do however point out that she is probably not going to have so much time to concentrate on the target when it is a real deer.

ditto

That has to make you very proud you are doing a fine job with her... at 8 years old she has a lot of hunting ahead of her and you for that matter.

Re: how do you get a kid

I am glad to hear that you did not let her see your frustration. Showing disappointment or frustration to a child is one of the biggest road blocks an adult can create that will depleat their confidence. My suggestion would be to create a fun challenge for her by asking her to see if she can place 5 kill shots on the target in 10 minutes. The more she practices the more efficient she will become, just be careful not to place to much emphasis on the speed and to maintain that she only squeezes the trigger if the shot is there remembering that SAFETY is the foremost priority. I use three basic checks in my head before I make the shot. They are: Safety- make sure the target is clear and you are secure in your stand, Yardage- assess the range, and Shot Placement- pinpoint your desired point of impact and focus on that only. These three little things take just a few seconds , but allow me to quickly determine if the shot is there and keep me consistent in my shot placement. Good Luck.
