AJ
Re: How does it stack up? Here is the data, you so graciously asked for. It compares: 25-06 Remington 120 gr bullet with a 26" barrel 257 Weatherby Magnum 120 gr bullet with a 26" barrel .270 Winchester 130 gr bullet with a 24" barrel .270 WSM 130 gr bullet with a 24" barrel 6.5mm Remington Magnum 120 gr bullet with a 22" barrel As you can see, for a deer/pronghorn gun, they are all similar. With only 4.5" less drop at 400 yards, compared to a 25-06, I can not realistically say the Wby provides enough of a benefit to warrant the cost. You can hold on fur out to 350 yards with either of them. With the Wby, you are also getting 20% more recoil. If you wanted to use the same gun for elk, I would definately step up to the .270 Win. I would say its the minimum I would recommend for elk. AJ
Re: How does it stack up? Once you reach a certain point, the velocity gain vs powder needed really goes down. Lame Simpson did a .25 STW. It was just marginally better than the .257 Wby. One cartridge that I thought about building was the 6.5mm STW. It will do the deed but it needs at least a 28" barrel to get the maximum benefits.
