PAbowhunter4life
I personally think you should have made it through that rib with no problem, especially with a quality head like the Muzzy. I'm not sure what to tell you really. Muzzy's having been blowing holes through deer now for quite some time, as well as larger game. I am willing to bet that your arrow just hit that last rib at an akward angle which is why you didn't get full penetration. I would bet that the arrow angled a little bit and one of the blades hit the rib and just slid along it, as opposed to the Trocar tip which is know to bust bones. That's my 2 cents, I wouldn't give up on the Muzzy's just yet.
dartonman
Re: Muzzy Broadhead question Dont give up and change in the middle of season...here's why.....the trocar tip did its job, period...deer dead, right....any amount of angle, deer moving during shot, placement of shot on part of body, all variables come into play....I'd almost bet money that the doe will get a pass thru...tip for you, with a small flat file, with a not very aggressive edge, take it to the trocar tips and polish them slightly, you can even do this with a wet stone, then feel your tip, trust me on this, dont change up in the middle of season, its just not the right thing to do in my opinion, you wont be sorry, remember to take the last 5 seconds before the bow goes off to place it where it counts, and you'll do fine......al
Guest rbfree1
Re: Muzzy Broadhead question Sorry Muzzys are JUNK!!! Thunderheads Baby!! thats Meat and potatos!!! I know everybodys going to flip but I have seen muzzys in action on elk and they will never tip my arrows>>>>!! Thunderhead 125's 13 elk less than 40 yards tracking on all of them. 3 shot with muzzy double lunger shots to boot. first, 240 yards second,175 yards third, 210 yards. I think there is something wrong in the design, I don't know what??? every time I ask a guy that lost a elk they have been shooting muzzys, For deer They are fine but I can't stand that head anymore. I am a believer in the thunderheads and wont shoot anything else out of my bow.

NYBUCK
Re: Muzzy Broadhead question Vapor - I shoot almost the same set up, 70 lbs, axis arrows with a 28 inch draw and 100 grain muzzys. I have shot thunderheads for years and killed a lot of deer with them, I also shot mechanicals, rocket sidewinders, and have shot deer with them but have lost a couple too. This year I switched to the muzy when I got the axis arrows they fly absolutely great. I killed my bear last year with the muzzy on a goldtip arrow and got a complete pass thru and she only went 40 yds. I have heard to many good things about the muzzys and the way the are flyng with my set-up I am sure they will do the job. I think they maybe there was some deflection and it caught the rib wrong and wouldn't give you a pass thru, but like others said I would change at this point in the season. After all you did get a good blood trail and a dead deer. Just my opinion.
Chrud
Re: Muzzy Broadhead question Hmm...I shot through both shoulders on a doe last year with the same bow as you, Muzzy 100's, 4-blades and A LOT lighter arrow. 14 yards. Don't know why yours didn't pass through. Muzzy's are great heads, I don't know what the problem was.
Jeramie
Re: Muzzy Broadhead question Just a fluke..... I just switched to Muzzy this year. I use to shoot thunderheads. They way the blades lock down seem to be 200 times better. They are very solid and plenty sharp enough to get the job done..... I wouldn't worry about it. Countless deer are killed every year by Muzzy with ease. It sounds to me like it was just one of those times.... It happens.
Rut-Nut
Re: Muzzy Broadhead question Stick to MUzzy's...............they are BAD TO THE BONE!!!!! I have seen one that hit the back of a deer's head.(no, not where it was aimed- shot was high) Went in behind the right ear, and the trocar tip was sticking out of the left eye! Talk about penetration!!!!! If you can put one into, and partially out the other side of a deer's skull................................'nuff said!!!! I switched to Muzzy's years ago after problems with Sattlelites. Never had the need to change. THey fly like darts, and that interlocking design is tops!!!!! BAD TO THE BONE!!!!!!!!!!!!! hoosierhunter
Re: Muzzy Broadhead question Here's my take.......This is my first year shooting Muzzy and I have had a great and a terrible experience. First I'm shooting a Fred Bear G2XL pulling 68 LBS. with PSE Carbon Force Dominator 300's with Muzzy 125's.......Im shooting constistently from 275-279 FPS. Now here's the stories....My first deer shot was a big eight from 7 yards....I hit him square in the front left shoulder slightly quartering away. On that buck I only got 7-9 inches of penetration and lost that buck.....He ran 450 yards before I backed out for the night and went back the next day to find nothing.....He never bedded down and put out alright blood, then spilled blood for 75 yards, then dried up in about 5 yards........This was absolutely crazy to me seeing how close this deer was and not getting any penetration....The next deer came the next night and was a doe at 15 yards straight broadside.....Again another shoulder shot that passed through the left shoulder through the brisket and out the other shoulder!!!Complete pass through!!!!This deer ran 40 yards and was done.......(BTW didn't mean to take shoulder shot on second deer, I did mean to on first one b/c that was the only shot and I was confident in my setup, but obivously it didnt' do the job) Now after a very heated debate with some people about not being about to hit a deer in the shoulder from that close and getting good penetration(I still think I can) I took the broadhead that I killed the doe with and shot it into a CEMENT block, not a cinder block CEMENT block.........That broadhead stuck right in the block and didnt break!!!!! So I guess my take on this is that Muzzy is just fine along with a lot of other boradheads out there....The thing that matters most is shot placement.......I truely believe that part of the hit is luck of the draw when you hit bone.......I really think that if I hit that buck 99 more times with that same shot that I would kill that deer almost 100% of the time.....Sometimes things just don't go as planned...... The only advice I would give you on broadheads is fixed blades over mechanical blades....I have seen way too many of my buddies lose deer due to malfunctions of mechanical blades versus fixed blades......Granted some fixed blades malfunction too, but not to the degree of mechanical blades.......Whatever you decide be confident if your setup....Even if it's as much as a mental thing make the switch.....Mental confidence affects the shot just as much as equipment....... Stinger-Hunter
Re: Muzzy Broadhead question Same thing happened to me last year. I changed my arrows. I'm shooting carbon express arrows now. If I could suggest the same as the rest of the guys here...Don't change broadheads. Shoot a couple more times. If anything, I would change the arrow. Muzzy's rock!!

Muzzies are bad to the bone. could have been a deflection, could have been anything. worried about penetration, wait and see what a cut on impact looks like after coming in contact with some bone. brad dryden
Re: Muzzy Broadhead question I shoot 67lbs and the deer I have shot went clear through and one I cleared right through both shoulders but if you shoot farther if will still penetrate. O and ther muzzys are 100grain.
Addct2hntng
Re: Muzzy Broadhead question wierd so far my G2XL and muzzy 100 grainers have been great!!!!! when I shot my doe it went in the front and out the back complete passthrew .. I think Ill be sticking to muzzys always hated the way thunderheads go together.. either shoot what ever works for you and good luck !! EIGHTPOINT
Re: Muzzy Broadhead question No such thing as alot dead or alittle dead. Dead is dead. The only thing that worries me about non pass thru's is blood trails if the animal runs out of sight. An arrow that stays in has a poorer blood trail than an arrow that pass's thru. My opinion. AaronS
Re: Muzzy Broadhead question [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I dont want to switch to something different because they fly great out of my bow im just worried i might lose a deer because of them. Was never going to change during the season just thinking about changing after the season has ended. I think that i will stick with the muzzys but go down to 100gr instead of 125. Maybe i need a little more speed because im guessin im only shooting about 220 to 230fps since i have a short draw and a heavy arrow. You think this should do it? [/ QUOTE ] I would go to a smaller head say around 100 but I would stay with the Muzzys. You probably do need some more fps with that heavy arrow. I might would even consider looking into a lighter arrow after the season. FPS is a big deal in bow hunting. More penetration and also lessens the chances of a deer jumping the string on u. Just my 2 cents. But whatever you do be confident with it. [/ QUOTE ] I have to disagree. Having a quiet bow is much more important than having a fast shooting bow when it comes to hunting. A heavier arrow absorbs more energy (vibration) from your bow and results in less noise. Also, a lighter arrow does not lead to more penetration, it's the other way around. Kinetic energy favors the heavier arrow. All this being said, I'm not saying everyone should shoot heavy arrows....I hunt with Goldtips myself....I'm just explaining how it works. The main advantage of the lighter arrow will be less arrow drop over distance, so distance judgement is not quite as critical.
brad dryden
Re: Muzzy Broadhead question I say the heiver arrow penetrats better becouse if you have a steel ball and a copper ball same size and all witch will do more indintion when it hits the ground the steel will becouse its weight hope you understand what im saying but its somthing you will have to practice with if I were you first thing I would do is raise the lbs if you can just as long as its still somfortable and just practice with diffrent combinations.
