Re: piebal deer?

I was talking to a deer biologist and he thinks that this piebald was caused by inbreading. wich could explane his bone structure in his face.

I ran to the taxedermist last night and grabed the skull and jaw bone. looks as if he is 2.5 but i'm no pro when it comes to ageing jaw bones.

we have 4 of them in the area that we know about, 3 that are alive grin.gif

Re: piebal deer?

congrats to your buddy, I got this game cam pic back in April, I'll be keeping an eye out for this guy come November. He's the only exception I'll make in our QDM.

I haven't seen this buck in person, but I have seen a piebald doe in the wild before, she had just a tiny bit of brown on top of her head, the rest of her was almost completely white.

Re: piebal deer?

oh so there's more in your area, it seems that once you see one piebald, you start seeing lots of them. I noticed this in conversations with other hunters on the internet who took multiple piebalds in a season, and it seems to be true here as well. We had never seen a piebald before last season and I know of at least 3 that have been seen in our area since then, possibly more. I wonder why this is, does the inferior gene really get passed on that easily? I'd love to hear what a biologist would think about this.

Re: piebal deer?

FF that is cool. from what I understand you realy don't see to meny with larger antlers. I saw one once up in Carroll county, in the morgan run area it looked like a paint horse with an 8pt rack on it (a big 8pt rack)

that is what was wierd, she had the brown and white spots likt a piebald but the black spots as if she was a melanistic deer as well. confused.gif

GS I know the ones you are talking about, I see them alot driving up the pike. I'd venture to say that the one I saw and the one that my buddy shot are the same deer. we only hunt 1 to 2 miles from there and there is more then enough woods for them to travel thru. but maybe they arnt.

Re: piebal deer?

We had 3 does running around our part of northern Carroll County about 5 years ago...all white. Never had binoculars on to see if had a pink nose (i.e a true albino). I know they were special to see...definately different, and they either died off or were shot. Never saw them while hunting, but saw them all the time while driving the same road to and from my parents.
