Sorry, I do most of my hunting in the much more open areas in the southern half of the province so I might not have much to tell you. There's not as many big deer in the areas I hunt as up along the forest fringe where you'll be hunting, but I love spot and stalk hunting.

It sounds like you'll be hunting in the forest or forest fringe. The Candle Lake area has produced some great bucks, but you will have to put in time on the stand to get a chance at one. Don't expect the forest to be crawling with deer. You might sit all week on a stand for one chance at a decent buck. There is a lot of crown land, but there's also quite a few outfitters in the area. I'm not sure what the access to land is like up there in November. As far as weather in the 3rd week of November, it can be anywhere from +10C to -30C, so be prepared for the cold.

If you are hunting forest fringe, you might be able to still hunt, but most guys hunting in the forest or forest fringe hunt from stands. Grunting and rattling should both work at that time of the year since it will be just past the rut when bucks are still in the mood looking hard for the few does that come into estrous a little later. A lot of guys hunt over bait piles in the forest (which is legal in SK), but there's no guarantee that dropping a bushel of oats on the ground in the middle of the forest will produce a swarm of deer. Baiting is the preferred method for outfitters at that time of year because bucks that haven't fed during the rut are more prone to take a chance and feed during the daylight during that time of November. However, a lot of outfitters also prefer baiting because it forces their hunters to stay in one spot so that the outfitters don't have to spend all week doing search and rescue for lost hunters in the forest.

The best thing to do is probably ask your friends brother before-hand how he plans to hunt (which I'm sure you've probably already done).

You'll find there are quite a few outfitters like LDB said. Remeber that they are huntng on crwon land and thier spot is designated for outfitting. However, it is crown land and they cannot keep anyone else from hunting there, don't let them try tell you otherwise. Give them some space, stay away from the stands they have and you'll egt along well. Like LDB said, there are some great bucks there but deer #'s are not high, you may be in for some dry spells without seeing deer but pe patient. If there is alot of snow, find some heavy used trails and sit tight nearby.

If you're on the fringe of the forest you'll see more deer but it'll likely be private land and you'll have to ask for permission. I'd recommend spending a day or 2 south of Candle Lake in the Meath Park area if you're not having alot of luck in he forest.

Be patient, you may see the best buck you've ever seen when hunting those big woods. Good Luck. grin.gif
