Did you cry

Re: Did you cry

I didn't cry, but laughed at my first attempt at a deer. I completely missed it at 50yards. The deer jumped straight up in the air and ran into a tree on it's way fleeing my poor attempt at a very close distance rifle shot. The only way that deer would have got injured was either a heartattack or damage from hitting the tree because I left no marks on it at all. I was so frustrated that I just had to laugh to ease myself back up and sit back down and wait for the next one. Which I did kill with a single shot, but it was a tiny button buck about 50lbs or less because I could pick it up with one hand (at age 13) and carry it around. It was the easiest deer I've drug out of the woods ever. Didn't even break a sweat. Meat was darn tastey though, very pink and tender like veal.

Re: Did you cry

I got my new wife to start huntin with me last year. I took her to a place where I knew she would at least get a shot at a doe and would'nt you know it! In comes a nice six pt walkin straight at us. I kept telling her to wait on a better shot but she talked me into letting her shoot at it straight on in the chest. SHE MISSED LOW and I could have bawled! Hopefully she do better this year, and I bet she waits on the good shot this year LMAO! grin.gif

Re: Did you cry

I've had a couple misty eyed moments over the years. Deer hunting is a very emotional sport. I've cried only once and it happened last year. On opening day of early ML season I was hunting in back of the house. I shot a doe for camp meat. I got on the radio to my buddies and gave the secret code word that there was a deer down. I set the radio back in my pocket and leaned back in my seat. Then the little voice of my 3 year old daughter came across the radio and said "Nice shot daddy". I lost it. My wife asked me later why I took so long to respond to Abigail. I told her I couldn't, I was crying.

Re: Did you cry

I started hunting the chipmunks that littered the woodlot behind my house when I was about 10. I shot them with my pellet gun, and kept them from overpopulating the place. Well one day I saw a big squirrel, and darned if I didn't "hafta" get a better look through the scope. I put the scope on the amazing creature, and watched as it hopped up a branch some 15 yards away. It looked like a real trophy compared to my usual chipmunk - should I shoot the gray squirrel??? Pffft... the airgun goes off; the squirrel goes down - but not for the count... I ran up to it and its squealing and wriggling around in the leaves. Immediately I freaked, and ran to my house to get my Dad. By the time I got there I was bawling and sobbing (half because I knew I had done something wrong, I was told to stick to chipmunks). It took me a minute or two to pull him into the woods. I couldn't speak because I was sobbing, and he was scared as to what I was going to show him. When I showed him the squirrel still quivering in the leaves, he pumped the airgun, and calmly dispatched it. I haven't cried since then, although I've wounded and lost several animals and I've been frustrated enough to cry.
