Re: TEAM 4

congrats buckbuster. I have been hunting my but off and seen a lot of deer! Passed on about 15 different bucks, and seen 4 that i would love to get. Missed a long running shot at a 130 class 10 point(thought it was bigger at first). I probably shouldn't have even shot at it due to the speed and range, but i missed clean...by about 5 feet lol. Had two big bucks go by just after legal light, not sure of the exact size, but big mature deer. And the kicker...had a 9 point(mainframe 8, 3 inch kicker on right G2) that would score about 155 at 7 yards. This deer was maybe 20 inches wide, tall, long tines, and gobs and gobs of mass. The wind was 40 miles an hour and you couldn't hear antything but trees braking. I had a wall of thick trees at my back hunting on the ground and suddenly a massive head and rack pop out 7 yards to my left. We had a stare down, but he finally went back in the trees without a chance to raise my gun. If it hadn't been so windy i would have heard him and had a 7 yard shot! Oh well thats hunting i guess. The weather is really bad for hunting now so hopefully it improves. The last 3 days have basically been one big blizzard. Lots of snow, lots of wind, and currently -22 out.

Re: TEAM 4

Fisherguy, that bad weather is a blessing - those deer will really be moving after the storm.

BTW, this weekend is the opener for the "regular" season in NY's southern zone. My ML is sighted in and ready to bark!

About a month ago the 1/2 acre rye plot the landowner planted was about 4" tall. Last week it was about 2" tall - deer are just mowing it down! The deer's normal travel pattern takes them right through the plot, and passes 10 - 40 yds from my stand. grin.gif

I expect to be posting some points for team 4 next Monday.

Re: TEAM 4

buckNrut, cold weather makes them move, the stuff we have had makes them hunker down in the thickest trees tehy can find. Even the bucks are hardly moving and it's peak rut. yesterday was -29 with winds gusting to 55 miles an hour. The snow is done falling at least. It looks like i may have been too picky looking for my monster buck...seems i have a job offer north of here that i am probably going to take. So we have a month of season left, but if i take that job my hunt is over, there aren't even deer up that far.

Re: TEAM 4

Wow fisherguy! Good luck with the job and hopefully you will still get a good opportunity to fill your freezer and put some points up. I think BeckNrut was refering to when the bad weather stops those deer will be starving and moving like crazy. You all hunt in some crazy weather. I hiked 2000 feet down a mountain Saturday and didn't get anything. Took us awhile to hike back up. We were sweating pretty bad even though it was below freezing. Maybe Thanksgiving week will give me something extra to be thankful for.

Re: TEAM 4

Sounds like a plan. Some of the places I hunt, the ratios are way off. The rut is winding down now. I just don't like shooting one during the rut since you never know when a buck will follow. I don't mind shooting does early in the season and late in the season. Our season goes until Jan. 7 so I will have no problems getting a doe for the team.

Still hoping for some headgear. Go Team 4!!!

Re: TEAM 4

Well, we made it back from Kansas without getting hurt or arrested. The hunting proved to be tough. I shot a ten point. It is not what you would consider a "Kansas Brute", but he is a good deer. I shot him towards the end of the trip. We tried to hold out for a slammer, but it just was not happening. I hated to go all of the way to Kansas to kill this caliber of deer but, I was not coming home empty handed. The people who run the hunts told us to take anything we wanted, as long as we were happy.

He has a good spread and decent bases. But he is lacking in the length of his tines and girth.

Here he is:

My buddy passed up a couple decent 8 points. He came home empty handed, but he was happy. He knew he could have killed a deer if he wanted to.

I would submit this buck but my muley scores better!!!!

Re: TEAM 4

it was a rifle hunt. The outfitter called me three weeks prior to the hunt and told me she had other hunters cancel. I offerred her 50% of the price for two hunts, and she accepted it. So me and my bud hopped in the car and got out there. I got back to work this morning expecting to get fired, but it looks like I'm too valuable, ha ha ha!!!

I prefer to hunt with a bow, but it's nice to take the .300 weatherby for a little payback time!!!! Know what I mean?
