Re: does rattlng work?

It worked well for me once. I'll always try several times of the year especially during the pre-rut. Several year ago I had missed a great buck and I was so angry at myself for not putting a good shot on him. So I decided I was going to hunt the thick stuff being it was middle of the gun season. I was clashing those antlers together, grunting and moving leaves all around me simulating a real fight when I heard the brush come alive behind me. I had my gun on my lap sitting down with my back to the brush. This buck came behind me within 5 yds. These animals can pinpoint the sound. He was grunting so loud it almost scared me. He went to my right looking for that fight grunting the whole way and then came behind me and then went off to my left constantly grunting (I must have really pissed him off because he was never aware of my presence).

I shoot right handed so the only shot I had was when he came grunting to my left. He looked around and caught the glimpse of me raising the game to aim but it was too late for him. 25yds through his heart. Nice 8ptr with palmation on his antlers.

With that experience I will always try rattling.

Good luck.

Re: does rattlng work?

I've had rattling work a few times. The most memorable was many years ago I spotted a buck in a big meadow with about 15 does and fawns. There was no way to get to him so I decided to try rattling from about 150 yards away. The first sequence he never even looked my way. I waited 5 minutes and tried again....he looked my way this time, but just kept feeding. The instant my antlers clashed for the third try it set him off and here he came. He walked down a fenceline to an opening and then he was on a string. I drew my bow practically in self defense at 5 yards because I thought he was coming into the brush to see me. Couldn't get a shot as he whirled and ran.

The point is, you have to be patient and it might just take several tries to get a buck interested. I've also heard of guys accidentally banging their antlers getting into a treestand and had deer on top of them before they could get settled in. Seems like all deer react differently. I use real shed antlers and have never tried the bags.

I think an important thing to remember is rattle every 30 min or so. If you rattle every hour, you can miss out on a big buck cruising by that just came into range of hearing you rattle. I rattle and thats how I have killed some of my largest bucks. I also use a decoy and that really drives em crazy!

good luck!

Re: does rattlng work?

I have alot of success with rattling. You just have to know whens the right time. Hunting pressure in the area may also dictate how much success you have with it as well. Around here prerut falls generally the end of October (20+) At this time I will use my Rattle bag and do some light rattling. You just want to imitate light tickling of the antlers at this time. Maybe throw in a few grunts along with it.

During the Rut (first few weeks of Nov around here) I use it often. Dont be afraid to bang those things together, I use a grunt call with the sequence. Also if your hunting on the ground to sound even more realistic by stomping the ground and raking trees. During the Rut I generally rattle every half hour. I have called in bachelor groups of smaller bucks last year multiple times.

Re: does rattlng work?

Doesnt' work too well on the farm i hunt. I don't know if the doe to buck ratio is so messed up that the bucks are constanlty with a doe or what. The people in my hunting party including me have tried it many times with no success, so i have pretty much given it up. What does work on our farm is primos can call. I have called many in with it.

It has worked very well for me.Like most say you have to do it the right time of the season.Last year around the last of Oct.I seen a buck feeding about 100 yards away and just tickled the antlers together and he turned and darted the other way, about 5-10 minutes later he had circled around and came in thrashing a sapling and pawing the ground but just stayed out of bow range.

Re: does rattlng work?

Rattling can work in many cases, either pre rut, when mature bucks are taking away from all the other bucks and getting their territory all ready. I would tickle the antlers just a little if your in a big buck's territory. This buck might think that another buck is there to take him on for his territory.

In the Rut, more times than not the morning is the best time to rattle. Bucks will fight to the death to win over a hot doe. Rattle hard and even grunt during the rattling sequence.

Re: does rattlng work?

i use real antlers and yes rattling works so good for me here in Iowa that i grab my horns and grunt call before i grab my bow to go hunting.. shocked.gifgrin.gif

plus just dont believe that rattling is just for a specific time of the year , ie.. pre rut or rut . i have rattled in bucks as early as Oct 10th here and as late as jan 10th..

last year i rattled in over 40 bucks . problem was that i am after a 150 class or above.. i only had 2 of that size come in , but no shots..

its just the law of adverages , eventually i will connect on a bigun its just a matter of time and place..

early in the season i just rattle lightly, as the pre rut and rut start coming in i really let loose with all out battles . then as the season winds down i go back to light rattling..

Shoot Strong

Rattling work well here. I use a rattle bag. Problem is finding that big buck here in RI. Last year rattled in a nice 5 pointer during shotgun (early Dec). Is it normal to rattle in Doe? I seem to do it all the time. between rattling and bleets/grunts I have had doe walk right up on me.
