How important is camo?

reading the Mossy oak or realtree post got me thinking. For deer hunting how important is your camo actually?Seriously, Ive snuck up on deer and shot them before in a pair of blue jeans and solid colored T-shirt.I used to sit in treestand all the time in nothing but a pair of brown coveralls that didnt blend in with anything.Ive killed more deer wearing military camo patterns then I have any of these others that are made to look like trees.

Personally, I think movement is what gives you away, deer are pretty blind for the most part when it comes to stationary objects. On rare occasions i can actually say I think my camo helped me but for the most part I sometimes wonder if I couldnt get just as many deer sitting there in blaze orange coveralls grin.gif

i think camo is much more important for bowhunting...when im rifle hunting...i wear brown carhartts and a orange sweatshirt....however im never really worried about being busted with a rifle b/c i can reach out and touch them

Re: How important is camo?

i think you couldget away without it but i

would hate to be sitting there when the big boy was

walking in and everything is going great he walks behind some brush and you draw and the does

behind you pick you off because you didnt see or hear them come in but that is in my head and if i didnt where it i would be thinking i stood out like a sore thumb

Re: How important is camo?

Naturally I think Camo is important...

Where would I be...Without Realtree?

Sometimes I think the manufacturer adds UV brighteners to their fabric to make the pattern stand out, and make it more attractive to us.

It is not the fault of the pattern or those who sell the patterns. It is strictly the manufacturer of the garment.

The military spec. clothing cannot be manufactured with any UV brighteners, so military clothing is probably some of the best to actually hide in, from the deer.

But what the heck...We all want to be in style don't we?

Wear Realtree or Advantage line of hunting clothing only. You want to look your best while having your picture taken with your trophy.

Re: How important is camo?

I agree with most of the above statements. If within close quarters I think it helps more to have your pattern broken up rather than if you are long range. I personally think movement is probably a bigger alarm to them rather than camo pattern.

I was pretty close to this buck. He looked right at me and knew something was different, but actually didnt spook. I felt like camo was pretty much mandatory under these circumstances.

Absolutely grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

I used to wear Woolrich in their grey striped pattern for years with much success. I still wear the striped pants. However what really turned the page on concealment for me was when I started wearing a face mask. It was UNREAL, it was like I disappeared. It is amazing how close deer will come in when they cannot see skin.

Re: How important is camo?

I have to 1000% agree with Horst.

Brand name camo of today, the photo realistic type anyways, is to catch the hunters eye more then to hide you from game. JMO

To me all this new camo looks solid brown at even 40 yards and is by no mean effective unless game is super close AND you dont move.

However I feel the military camo, or blocky shapes like Preditor camo will, by far, break up your outline better.

I must give kuddos to 3D leafy and gillie style camos as they break up an outline far better then pictures of leaves and branches and any other camo for that matter.

With that stated, I have several pieces of old 20-200 Realtree and Mossy Oak Break-Up camo I bought several years ago. I will NOT buy any more photo realistic camo.

My next trip for newer camo will be to the Army/Navy store OR Cabelas "Outfitter" style camo.

A home made gillie using old issued military shirts cut into 8" strips and sewn to an old net 3D leafy suit is what I use during bow, and what ever is warmest is what I wear during rifle.

I do not bash brand name camo but for what you pay for it and how well it works is not worth it to me when you can gain the same results from a plaid shirt.

This goes for deer hunting arer are Just My Opinions. LOL

Turkeys are another story.

In this case I feel photo realistic camo does give you an edge when you sitting on the ground trying to get birds in at 20 or 30 yards.

They see colors and thier eyes are very sharp.

Re: How important is camo?

I agree wearing camo while turkey hunting is a must but not for deer.I wear blaze orange during gun season and have shot deer as close as 5yds.Like alot of others have said ,movement is what gets you busted.I wear camo during archery season but mainly because I don't want other hunters to know where my treestands are.I have some not too far off the road.

Re: How important is camo?

If you guys ( and I know you do ) watch the hunting shows, pay attention to what the guides are wearing LOL. If if's camo it stinks !! LOL. I thought blue stood out for deer, but alot of them wear it. Yes, I camo everything, does it work, I don't know, but I feel better wearing it cool.gif
